Hey I am a senior in high school, I would love to go to NYU because being in NYC would be perfect for what I want to do (communications, comedy) but my cumulative GPA and SAT scores aren't high enough to make me competitive for admission. I am thinking of transferring after my freshman year of college wherever I end up, plus my grandfather graduated from NYU which could help my chances, but is it difficult to get in as a transfer student?

Depends on the NYU school you want to transfer into, and what major you would be transferring under.

This is quite a general question, and you could most likely google “difficulty transferring NYU”, or look at transfer statistics online, etc. Also, try applying anyway. If you’re a talented writer and can put an explanation as to why you’re grades and scores aren’t up to par and have your individual voice come through, you may have a shot.

NYU is a very selective school, and I can’t give you classes to take because I don’t know your intended major. If you plan on transferring, you better bust your butt in whatever college you actually go to (get as close to 4.0 as possible, take rigorous classes, focus your extracurriculars into one category (business, the arts) and achieve leadership roles in those organizations. Which college are you planning on attending? It will be difficult, but if you work as hard as you can, you may have a shot.

2008 Transfer stats:
Total number of transfer students who applied: 5,390
Total number of transfer students who were admitted: 1,416
