I am in my first year of college, and not going to lie, I knew that even before I started college I did not want to attend the school I had committed to (It was my safety school, in 2017 I had moved to America from a country with a totally different school system so I was confused as to how the college application process worked and I was too scared to talk about it with my guidance counselors, stupid of me I know). I attended it because my parents were really happy about the full scholarship I had gotten and I thought that I should just go there to make them happy. I knew from my first week that I really wanted to transfer, but I thought of giving it a year to see how it’ll go and how I’d feel. Nothing changed. I am even more unhappy and I dread going to school, which really sucks cause i feel like a brat for dreading going to school when there are people that would do anything to go to school but are unable to. Throughout my years in high school, I knew that I always wanted to do something with science when I went up to college. Unfortunately, the college that i’m attending offers no science majors so I decided to major in Information Technology instead (which made me even more unhappier).
Talking with my parents about it, they were pretty upset that I wanted to transfer and it took a (really) long time to explain and get them to understand how I was feeling. I felt drained from the thought of getting up from bed and going to school because I knew I didn’t enjoy the classes. Despite feeling like this, I still managed to keep my grades within A’s and B’s (with one C last semester but…lets not talk about that lol). My parents finally agreed to let me transfer and asked me how I would go about doing it.
I was thinking of transferring to a CC near where I live so that I could complete the requirements for a science major for my Sophomore year and then for Junior year I would transfer back into another 4year.
I was wondering if this is possible? Or if I would have to do full 2 years of CC before being able to transfer out. Has anyone been through this situation?
Lots of students do exactly what you are proposing to do. Go to the CC and meet with the counselors there. Work out a plan for fulfilling the requirements for your new major. Ask about articulation agreements for your major at colleges and universities in your state. Depending on where you want to go next, you might be able to transfer on after only a semester or two.
How will you pay for other schools? Transfers don’t generally get much aid.
