Transferring from A&M to McCombs

Hey
I am currently enrolled as an Economics major at A&M and was hoping to transfer to the McCombs School of Business my sophomore year (Fall 2011). I've noticed that it is required to take Calculus I & II and wanted to know if anyone has had experience in this because I am not sure which math classes at A&M would be considered "Calculus I & II". I was hoping that there may be a student on here who has gone through the same process that would know this but if not I'll be happy to post the courses and course descriptions of the math classes at A&M.
Right now I am enrolled in MATH 141 - Business Math I
and I was going to take MATH 141 - Business Math II second semester...

another question I have is if the 30 transferable hours that you need to transfer include AP credited hours.

I've sent an email to UT about this too, however maybe I should send one with the courses i'm taking to make sure they will all transfer...

any help would be greatly appreciated

EDIT: I just was looking at the course catalog and the engineering math classes seem to fit Calculus I & II (I think I remember reading somewhere that McCombs wanted Integral and Derivative Calculus covered...maybe)

Engineering Mathematics I. (3-2). Credit 4. Rectangular coordinates, vectors, analytical geometry, functions, limits, derivatives of functions, applications, integration, computer algebra (Maple). Prerequisite: MATH 150 or equivalent. Credit will not be given for more than one of MATH 131, 142, 151, and 171.

Engineering Mathematics II. (3-2). Credit 4. Differentiation and integration techniques and their application (areas, volumes, work), improper integrals, approximate integration, analytic geometry, vectors, infinite series, power series, Taylor series, computer algebra (Maple). Prerequisite: MATH 151 or equivalent. Credit will not be given for both MATH 152 and 172

and here's what it says for business math:
Math 141 Business Mathematics I: Linear equations and appli-
cations, linear forms and systems of linear equations, matrix algebra and applications,
linear programming, probability and applications, statistics.

Math 142 (MATH 1325) Business Mathematics II. (3-0). Credit 3. I, II, S Derivatives, curve sketching and optimization, techniques of derivatives, logarithms and exponential functions with applications, integrals, techniques and applications of integrals, multivariate calculus.

Basically you will need to complete all 4 business indicator classes and >3.9 GPA to be in for sure. And I’m pretty sure your AP credits would count for the 30 hours.

right I get that, I’m just trying to figure out which course at A&M would be equivalent to those indicator classes because there isnt just a Calculus I or a Calculus II at A&M

I took Math 153 in high school. It transferred in as UT’s equivalent of M 408M (actually they gave me 3 hours so 308M, but still counted). So, I think the equivalent of M 408K and M 408L (which is Calc 1 and 2) is Math 151 and 152.

I think this will be more helpful

[UT Austin Automated Transfer Equivalency System](http://www.utexas.edu/student/admissions/ate/)

OP - I am a transfer from A&M. You need Math 151/152, Math 171/172, or Math 147/148 for the equivalent M 408 K/L at UT. Math 141/142 at A&M is not the calculus used at UT for business.

Transfer hours does include your AP credits if it shows up on your A&M transcript. You’ll have to have A&M send a detailed description of your AP credits, because A&M apparently only list AP credits as “transfer hours” to UT.

You’ll also need ECON 202/203 if you haven’t already have economics down.

wow thanks for the very helpful answers!

and yeah, I’m already in Econ202/203 (my major at the moment is economics).

I’ll be sure to switch to 151 as soon as they open registration back up…

one more question though (a little off topic), how do i get my AP credit onto my A&M transcript? collegeboard.com?

You can also take MATH 131 at A&M. I transferred to UT in the fall (I did change my major from Business at A&M to Psychology at UT, but that makes no difference) MATH 131 translates to M 308K at UT. and you can check to make sure but I emailed and talked with UT advisors who told me it was the same as M 408K it was just 3 hours instead of 4. Math 151 at A&M is engineering math and involves a lab which gives you 1 credit hour but TAKES a lot of time and is WAY harder than 131. The title for 131 is Math Concepts- Calculus.

ok so according to https://new.mccombs.utexas.edu/BBA/Admission.aspx:</a>
"# Calculus I (M 308K or M 408C)

Calculus II (M 308L or M 408D) "

however when i checked how everything transfers on [UT-Austin Transfer Credit Evaluation Results](http://utdirect.utexas.edu/adtreq/search-results.WBX)

none of the Math classes at A&M transfer to 408C or 408D (151 and 152 transfer to 408K and 408L though), are C&D the same as K&L?

another option I guess would to be take 131 which is 308K and 161 which 308L, but 161 is Engineering Math II so i’m not sure how well I would do in that class (come to think of it 151 & 152 may be prerequisites for 161)…

anyway, I guess my concern is whether 408K & 408L = 408C & 408D

"OP - I am a transfer from A&M. You need Math 151/152, Math 171/172, or Math 147/148 for the equivalent M 408 K/L at UT. Math 141/142 at A&M is not the calculus used at UT for business.

which did you take?

OP - There is no M 408 C/D equivalent at A&M, since A&M only teaches Calculus in a 3 semester sequence, not 2 & 3 like UT.

You claim your AP credits by calling/filling out forms from the MARS office. [Measurement and Research Services - MARS](http://www.tamu.edu/mars/)

I don’t know if what tyler5627 is true, but don’t take the 151/152 unless you’re really good at math. Take the 171/172 since it requires no lab. Or maybe the 131/161…

I took the 147/148…

hmm, well now I’m looking at 209/210…
I’m pretty decent at math, how difficult was 147/148?

McCombs does accept Business calculus 1 & 2. UT just doesn’t offer it anymore.

hold on…since A&M is a 3 semester sequence do i have to wait til spring 2011 to apply to McCombs?

You can only apply to McCombs for the fall semester.

owent92 - You only need Calc I & II for McCombs. No need to take Calc III.
