Is there a possibility that I will be able to transfer from a UC to my local community college? I'm thinking of doing this after my first year mainly because of financial difficulties.

Of course you can transfer from a UC to a community college. The question is how do u ensure that you can transfer back? Assuming that’s what you want to do…

Hello, yes it is completely possible! I’m actually in the same boat as you. I’m c/o 2017 and was enrolled in UCI my first year (last year). I got very little aid and still foolishly ended up going, wasting a lot of time and money (I totally regret not starting with CC in the first place, but no use in dwelling on what-ifs).

All you have to do is apply to the CC and they’ll likely take you. Just know that if you want to do for this coming fall, I’m not sure if you still can cause it’s pretty far into the summer (unless you already have or are planning to do it next year? also depends on your CC, I would call them).

Lastly you have to withdraw from the UC to confirm you’re not enrolling there next year (drops any fees you have, classes you are enrolled in, etc). I called first and they said it was better if I met with my advisor in person to complete the withdrawal process (though you can do it online I believe, but I drove to my UC and did it in person anyways because I wanted to ensure this went through, and also was on a time pressure since I needed it ASAP to terminate my apartment lease).

Note that you can still apply back to transfer into a UC, and on a brighter note, you’ll be considered a CC student if you take a certain number of units (bettering your chances). If all else fails, you can also do readmission to your old UC (in lieu of regular fall applications) and they’ll take you back in as long as your grades are decent.
