Transferring from an LAC to Top 50 College.

Hey everyone.

I'm entering a private Liberal Arts College this Fall as a Freshmen, but it's not really ranked for anything. It's considered a Tier One master's granting university, but honestly isn't known for much else.

I accumulated about 40 dual-credits in my Senior Year with a 4.0 GPA, so I'm entering the school as a Sophmore. I'm also a member of Phi Theta Kappa. If I amass about 30 more credits and maintain a 4.0 GPA, get awesome recs, gain good ECs, and possibly pick up a job or internship --- what are my chances of transferring into a top 50 college? Possibly even NYU?

Thanks, and feel free to be as harsh as possible. I want some serious feedback.

Do you guys need more info?

Why don’t you just finish up those 30 credits wherever it is that you earned them as dual credits, and then apply for transfer?

Do you like this LAC well enough to stay and graduate from there if you don’t get into a “better” school?

I earned them at a community college, but it would actually cost me more to go to there because of out-of-district fees, as the LAC is giving me a full ride.

Yes, I would not mind staying. Although, I don’t see why I wouldn’t be able to get into a school like George Mason University, which is a Tier Three school. So again, do you think it is possible? I don’t mind retaking the SAT, even.

Thanks for the reply.

I obviously don’t know too much about your situation, but if you’re getting a full ride at a good LAC, why not stay there and then focus on getting a graduate degree somewhere with more name recognition (if that’s your final goal)?

Three years will fly by very quickly and you might even end up really liking the school.

Any good top LACs will be far better on the resume than George Mason University, which isn’t too well recognized. I want to know what is your college major, therefore we can return and recommend you some schools.

It’s not that I don’t like the school, I think it’s pretty awesome and has a lot to offer — it’s just always been a goal of mine to get a degree from AU, GWU, GMU and the like, as my ultimate goal is to go to law school and I’d like to aim as high as possible.

I know people here say not to attend a school if your ultimate goal is to go somewhere else, but out of all the schools I was accepted to, this was really the best one I got into. I had a few bumps with my admissions materials and the majority of my transcripts weren’t complete until very January/February, so that nullified me from applying to a lot of schools. Long story.

Thanks.

That’s the thing. My LAC isn’t really ranked for anything other than as a top master’s granting university. Right, I know GMU isn’t all that amazing. Bad example, I guess.

I’m majoring in Political Science/Government, with a Pre-Law track. Thanks for the help.
