Transferring from Brandeis???

Hi there,
I am a freshman at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. I have been here about a month and I absolutely hate it. When I first decided to come here, I was excited. The academics were said to be top-notch and the people I had met previously were friendly. Then things changed. The academics are no joke...I am very impressed with them. On the other hand, the social life (or lack thereof) is another story. I am absolutely bored out of my mind here, especially on weekends. I went for a walk on Saturday and saw maybe about two people outside. My classes end early in the day (around noon), and my clubs don't start until the evening, so I am left with large periods of time in which I have nothing to do. Friends are also a problem. The first week I came here, everyone was super friendly, and I even made a bunch of friends myself. Then everyone settled into a routine, and I found myself left out of my group of friends (they are all from a different dorm) and unable to break into any other circle of friends. The people I meet in the five clubs I am in will talk to me, but none of them ever want to hang out.

I guess my questions are: is it me? Are all schools like this? And if not, what are some other schools to which I can transfer that are the polar opposite of this place, but yet still emphasize high standards in academics?

Thanks!

Hey, I know exactly how you feel. While, my problem with my school is that its isolated/tiny, I know how you feel about the finding your group of friends. At my school, it seems like a lot of people have already made friends and are in a routine, and leave others out (sort of cliquey). Because of this I’ve decided that after a year, so Fall 2011, I’m going to try to transfer to UNC, UVA,JMU, or UMD as I want a bigger college. All my friends at these big schools make it seem so exciting and are really getting the full college experience that I want. I hope this helps.

Thanks for replying. Yeah I was accepted to UMass Amherst and Northeastern, both big schools in Massachusetts but I’ll admit, I was more concerned about prestige than I was about how I would actually enjoy the school. I applied to BC but I got waitlisted…I think that is where I’m going to try to transfer to. If not, I think I will try my luck at both Northeastern and UMass again, where I have friends that are all having a blast. I can’t even imagine spending four years here. It’s good to know that it’s not just me going through this.

Yeah, no problem. I think I read somewhere that BC’s transfer admit rate is extremely low though, but good luck! hopefully your happier at your next college!
