Transferring from One Sister to Another (Barnard)

Hi all,

I am currently as a Seven Sisters college, and I’m a second semester freshman. I am entertaining the idea of transferring because, while I love the academics and extracurriculars at my school, I hate the living situation and I feel trapped in the small area that is campus and the immediate surrounding parts of town. I would be looking for an urban campus where it’s easier to “escape.” I am looking at several schools in New York City, but Barnard is my top choice. I have a few questions regarding transfer admissions.

  1. I know that Barnard, like most schools, is need-aware with transfer admissions. As someone who currently pays only somewhere around $20k for college, would this negatively impact me? Or does need-aware really only impact students needing closer to a full ride scholarship? (I know this is kind of hard to say, but do you have a sense of how that policy actually plays out?)

  2. As someone coming from an already competitive school with a 3.85 GPA (I expect it to be higher after spring semester too) and a 2270 SAT, and assuming my essays would be decent, do you have any idea what my chances might be? (alternatively, do you know how competitive transfer admission is compared to freshman admission?)

  3. Do you think having attended another Seven Sisters school would help me from an admissions standpoint? (Just curious)

Thank you! Also let me know if I should post this on the Barnard board as well.

I believe there is only a couple more days till applications are due so I’m not sure if you have the time.

  1. Need aware does play a factor but only slightly. If two candidates were identically the same and they had to pick one, they would pick the one without financial aid.
  2. Depends on your college GPA, if your college GPA is solid (3.8+) then of course you would have a solid chance. Not exactly sure what the transfer rate to Barnard. If you were accepted to one of the seven sisters college during freshman applications you are qualified for Barnard.
  3. Yes, not sure to what extent but they will certainly take note that you come from a peer institution.

@thecoolboy1234 If I try to transfer, I’m going to try to transfer in as a second semester sophomore or a junior; starting the app for transferring in as a sophomore in the fall with only a couple weeks until the app is due would be an awful decision haha. Thanks for your response!
