Transferring from Tulane to Binghamton??

I’m currently an international freshman at Tulane and did well the first semester (4.0 GPA with all math and science classes). My parents told me last month that their financial support for me at Tulane might diminish for the next year or two because of their not-so-good business back home. I’m thinking transferring to a cheaper school would help lift the financial burden up a bit.

The reason I picked Tulane was that the school offered me a good scholarship. I asked for more financial aid but I learned that what I was awarded was slightly more than what an international student is able to receive. I applied to several small jobs on campus but couldn’t get one. But frankly, I like Tulane and NOLA a lot. I have a good group of friends here and the courses and professors that I’ve experienced have been excellent.

Upon graduation, I’m planning to go on to medical/dental school, so I need to save as much money as possible. Tulane has this special program that I think could help me gain admission to Tulane Med School if I try hard enough. This may be the only way that I can get into a U.S. med school as an international student.

In terms of transferring, I’m thinking of Binghamton, which is another good school and $6,000 cheaper than Tulane (compared between a full cost at Bing and an already-subtracted-scholarship cost at Tulane)… But parts of me tell me to stay at Tulane.

This is going to be one of the most important decisions I’ll be making. Any suggestion and advice about anything would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Binghamton has an “early-assurance” medical school program with UBuffalo and Upstate Med, where you apply sophomore year if you have pre-reqs and get an early acceptance to those two particular med schools. The program is extremely competitive but you seem to be doing well at Tulane and therefore Bing should be no problem, and you should have a shot.

Overall the pre-med program at SUNY Binghamton is pretty good, and one of the more represented majors on campus. A lot of people there are either pre-med or in the accounting program. Both majors are strong, and it’s a really cheap school, so it’d probably be a good choice. However, I advise you to visit - the weather is cold and miserable much of the time.

ridgway, thanks for the response. I looked into their early assurance programs, but both of them require a pretty high SAT score, which I don’t quite have. I contacted the admission office and am waiting for their response. Do you think they allow me to retake the SAT while in college? In terms of weather, I don’t mind the cold much though!
