Hi everyone,
I’m about to be a second semester freshman at Stony Brook University and I’m on the Pre-med track. Problem is, I really dislike my school. Between campus size, class size, teachers, and much more, the school really isn’t a fit for me. The only thing I like about it is the honors college I’m apart of and due to a recent commitment for this program, I have to be there an additional two semesters. I know Stony Brook is known for premed but the negatives are greatly outweighing the positives from my experience there. I am eventually thinking of transferring to Fordham or Binghamton for premed. Can anyone give advice on how their premed programs are as well as if it would be worth transferring?
Just a side note: I am looking into these options due to affordability (Fordham is a private school but gives good scholarships) so if anyone has any other recommendations please feel free to add those (specifically colleges with smaller classes, classes don’t get much smaller at stony as you get deeper into your major)
Many schools will give good scholarships to incoming freshmen but not to transfer students. Having already attended college, most colleges will not allow you to apply as a freshman.
Check carefully where you are thinking of transferring to.
If you are premed I would stay at the same school and do your best to make your application strong so that you can apply to med school. You will need a committee letter or teacher recommendations for med school. Also if you are not planning any gap years you would then apply the summer after completing junior year. In transferring you may not get credit for all your coursework and have to spend an extra semester at the school you transfer to just to graduate.
Most scholarships are for incoming freshman not transfer students. For med school where you attend undergrad doesn’t matter. Med schools will do the initial screen based on your gpa and mcat scores. After that your recommendations, ec’s, and the content of your application will be used to determine if an interview will be granted.
- Check on how much You would have to pay . As mentioned, scholarships are mostly for freshman.
