I'll be an incoming freshman at a UC for Fall 2014. I really do not want to be at that UC for my entire undergraduate career because I just want to be at home, instead of dorming. I want to go to a local CC and transfer to the UC closer to my home where I can commute. The problem is I'll be taking Chem 1A at the UC, which is on the quarter system.

If I leave the UC after fall quarter and attend my local CC (semester system) for Spring 2015, will I have to start the entire Chemistry sequence over? The CC offers Chem 1A and Chem 1B since it is a semester course. Has anyone else had this experience? I have to take a year of biology courses in order to transfer into my desired major at the UC in my town, so I wanted to do that starting Fall 2015 (I am hoping to transfer in by Fall 2016).

I believe so. The UCs prefer you take a sequence at the same school so talk to the UC you’d like to transfer to, about your plan.

I think it depends. Save your syllabus, take it with you if you’re going to try to petition out. If you can, figure out what’s covered in your CC’s chem syllabus. Depending on the pace of the two schools, there’s a chance you’ll have covered the semester’s worth of material in a quarter, in which case I’d say go bother the admissions folk and do your best to get out of it.

But that might not be worth it, since the UC will see the original coursework - not whatever your CC determined was equivalent. So there’s a chance you’ll get a gap (you finished A and C, but you need to get credit for B) in the series or something. Uhm, just be careful, I guess? Worst case scenario you just have to retake the missing class at your next UC.

Is attending a CC on quarters an option? I know Foothill and De Anza were quarters (I went semesters -> quarters -> semesters when I transferred, yuck!). Everytime you change systems you tend to lose coursework and have to retake something, especially if your major has series… I’d recommend avoiding transitions if you can, or at least try to finish up series before you change schools.
