Transferring from UCD to UCLA

I am a freshman at UC Davis and I really want to transfer to UCLA because Davis is a bit far from my house and also I have a really bad allergy season because of all the pollen. But anyway... Can you guys please give me some feedback on how I can enhance my chances and also in your opinion do you guys think I can transfer or not

So my stats:
GPA: 3.4 (freshman FALL + WINTER quarter)
E.C.: mostly from high school (which includes various volunteering jobs, one internship, and this summer I'm going to intern at a private lab)
Quarter Units: 66 (by the end of Spring: 20 from APs)
Essay: proof edited by my comparative lit prof at UCD
Major: Microbiology
Prereqs: most (if not all)
UC Davis GE: probably completed

Pre-req classes i'm taking or going to take:
General Chemistry (3 quarters ~ 15 units)
General Biology (3 quarters ~ 14 units)
Calculus for Biology and Medicine (3 quarters ~ 12 units)
Organic Chemistry (3 quarters ~ 12 units)
General Physics (3 quarters ~ 12 units)

What you are trying to do is known as an intercampus transfer. UCLA claims that intercampus transfers get the same priority those from California Community Colleges, but you can see clearly that the admit rate for intercampus transfers is lower than that of CCC students by looking at their website. You will need to have at least 90 quarter units by the end of Spring quarter before you leave UCD in order to transfer to a UC…judging by the current amount of units you have, you’re in pretty good shape.

Here’s where things get kind of hairy. We don’t really know which classes UCLA will accept for pre-req completion. There is no convenient assist.org webpage for us. My mistake was never asking my counselors what to do. I advise you go to them ASAP and plan out a course of action so that you aren’t panicking by the time you apply next year. Also, some of the pre-reqs UCLA indicates (I’m looking specifically at Life Sciences majors) seem to be tailored towards the CCC crowd. Depending on your school, they might actually vary slightly…for example…I applied from UC Irvine this year and was really worried my Calculus was not done. UCI only requires 2 Calculus courses to cover single variable differential and integral calculus. I had to email UCLA to get assurance that my 2 quarters actually does satisfy their one year calc. requirement. Also, make sure that you take some sort of Biology lab at UCD before you transfer! This is imperative as I was told by UCLA that not having lab would significantly lower my chances of being admitted. Unfortunately, I did not plan ahead to try to figure out where to do that lab requirement…UCI used to offer a lower division biology lab and this year was the year they discontinued that course…

You need to raise your GPA asap. To be competitive for admissions to an impacted major (i.e. LS) at UCLA, you should generally have a 3.6+. It doesn’t seem like you’re quite there. Make sure you work hard Spring quarter. Some say that grades from the Fall Quarter prior to transfer are the most important…while I’m not sure if this is the case or not, it’s best that you strive for a 4.0 anyway. It will only get harder once you begin difficult courses like O-chem (which by the way, it seems that you will be taking concurrently with Physics?).

Lastly, I would advise you to write honestly about why you would like to transfer. If you really do not like UCD, explain why, and write about why you think UCLA would be a much better fit. That’s basically all I have to offer…not being accepted, I can only say this much. Good luck on your transfer.

^thank you for the feedback. yea, i’m a bit worry about my GPA too; i hope i can raise my GPA. do you think UCLA cares more about GPA or the amount of units/ pre-req completion?

Because UCLA is so competitive, pre-reqs are said to be expected. Without one, there’s strong chance of rejection, since there’s thousands of applicants who have both pre-reqs done as well as maintaining an impressive GPA.

UCLA will weigh completion of pre-reqs heavily. There aren’t “thousands of applicants” applying for Microbiology (or MIMG at UCLA), per se, but you should still strive to get all those pre-reqs complete. If you apply for the Biology major, there might be thousands of people competing for very few spots, lol. Don’t stress over Physics if you can’t handle it…its recommended but not required. DO make sure you finish Bio, Calculus, and Gen. chem and most importantly, a Biology lab…for you, it’s probably Bio2A at UC Davis. Check this articulation list:

https://www.lscore.ucla.edu/new/news/syllabi/Winter%2012%20ARTICULATION%20LIST%20CURRENT%20(2).pdf

Also, don’t apply for the Human Biology and Society Major. It’s a very attractive new program that was also one of my top choices, but upon looking into it further (as in looking on their website), it seems they advise transfer students not to apply to that…as very few will get in. They advise picking another major with the possibility of switching in later on. That’s just a small side note in case you were considering the major.

Alright, good luck with everything. Hope your finals went well.

Fulfill all GE and pre-reqs and pick a non-impacted major…anything less will probably result in a rejection.

thank you all for the feedback. I really appreciate it

@oceanpartier
how did you get/find the pdf thing? it really help thank you so much

It was on this page:

https://www.lscore.ucla.edu/links.php

I’ve often felt that what UCLA puts on their website is poorly worded and that UC xfers are actually not accorded the same priority as CC xfers (as borne out by the lower admit rate you mention). What UCLA says is

Now if you read this carefully it does not actually say that CC and other UC transfer students get the same priority, just that they get higher priority than some other group. What they wrote would not contradict at all a policy in which CC students are favored over UC xfers. And that would be in accordance with what the UC master plan all UC campuses are obliged to follow, which gives priority in the following order: 1) CC xfers 2) UC xfers 3) other 4 year colleges

thank you everyone :)

@oceanpartier if you don’t mind me asking but what was your GPA?

hi there! i think we are in the same boat (wanting to transfer from UCD to UCLA). congrats on getting into UCLA(hopefully i will follow in those footsteps next year). i was just wondering, how many quarters of gpa count towards the transferring? is it just freshman year + first quarter sophomore year? and also do you need to finish GE +pre reqs before you transfer?

For uc to uc transfer, all the units and gpa are transferrable. With that say, not all the courses have equivalent so i suggest finishing up ur GE requirement and have a decent GPA. I got in with 3.6+ GPA, completed GE and pre-reqs including the recommended ones
