Transferring graduate programs

I am a grad student in the early phase of my career at a good school (biomedical sciences). Unfortunately my program imploded, as most of the faculty decided to leave. There are many more grad students than positions for them. Hence I am looking to transfer schools.

How difficult is it to transfer schools? Is it at all possible to submit an app and be considered now for a start date this summer/fall? I figure most schools should know their status on the number of entering students within a few weeks. Do you think they would consider my app now if they have available positions. Anyone have thoughts on this?

thanks,

You may be better off waiting until Fall 2011 cycle to apply for a transfer and get funding. Your circumstances sound like you do have a legit reason for switching programs, especially for the PhD. Make sure you get support from your faculty members for the applications.

Really, none of the faculty members are planning to take a grad student or two with them/
