transferring in 1 year to CS major at UCB

So I have couple questions..im graduating hs this year and is considering transfer

i have taken many APs and according to the uc website most of them can be used to fulfill the IGETC requirements. Does the grades I received in high school for those AP classes matter when i use those credit for IGETC requirement?

How to boost the chances of getting into CS major at UCB besides prereqs and GPA? by Spring semester I will finish all the math prereqs listed on Assist besides discrete math cause its not offered at my CC. Finish 2 Java and 2 C++ classes. There are other languages but are not uc transferable, should i bother taking them as well? And for most other UC comp si Physics with Calc is required, but not at UCB. Should I take those classes? And what about other languages like php visual basics that are not uc transferable, should i bother taking them? And is there other things i can do to boost my chance of getting in to UCB? and there is compsi 61 series that are offered in summer session at UCB and the website suggest taking. would it help at all if i take it next summer, so that will be right before the fall semester that i transfer?

So it seems like UC only look up to the fall semester before transfer. And that i can apply to transfer as long as i finish IGETC requirements by Spring semester...Does it matter when i take the courses? Like can i leave the harder classes to Spring semester..which will not count in my GPA when I apply..? and that way by the time i transfer, which is this November, i would have taken only 7-9 classes at my CC. ( java, c++, calc 3, linear alg, art, music, psych, and possibly physics with calc 1 and 2).

I can guarantee you that you won’t be able to transfer within a year, because most UCs don’t look at 1 year transfers. Reasons for that is that they don’t have much to look at on the transcripts.

It really depends on how many AP classes you’ve taken and how many you passed. And I highly doubt it’ll cover the entire all of the GE requirements, plus you’ll have to fulfill extra requirements from the school itself, but you’ll have to look it up.

Not really sure how you would be able to “boost” your chances. I would really have to suggest finishing almost of all of the courses shown to you on assist.org, if your CC has them.

It really doesn’t matter when you take those courses, as long as you can plan them out within a year correctly, and again…I’m not sure you’ll get them all in within the allotted time. It just doesn’t seem possible.

so I have 9 aps and im sure that ill pass all of them. So all i need at CC is area 3s and english and one 4. So i need 5 more classes. and other major pre reqs. ill have around 15 classes after one year. What do you mean there is not much to look at, what does UC look besides IGETC and under division prereqs?

What I mean is that they probably won’t have enough to reference from when they look at your app. i.e. What classes you took the previous year if you were a 2 year transfer. Meaning that it’ll make the decision process even more difficult than it would be if you were a 2 year transfer. Also if you don’t mind me asking, why didn’t you apply for the UCs during high school?

Regarding soysauceboi’s comment-- Things are getting really tight with increasing numbers of transfer applicants, but there’s been no word from UCs for one years transfers to not apply.

I think it may be more difficult, but look into your local CCs that have honors/tap programs that accept students directly after high school graduation and have UC transfer agreements. I know most tap programs require at least 12 uc transferable units completed. I don’t know where you’re located, but Pierce College in la has such an agreement for graduated hs students.

No, your grades for those classes don’t matter. The AP scores you get do matter. Most scores above a 3 are good for IGETC, but I think for a couple of exams they require a score of 4 or above. I think they were the physics exams, or maybe I’m mistaken… look em up. Make sure the AP exams you’re taking apply for different sections on the igetc. Some APs like the various history exams cover a lot of range (3b-4h? i forget).

Boost your chances by finding a program like above that’ll accept hs students. I’d say take that course that UCB doesn’t require, because you need safeties. Also, don’t take any courses that aren’t uc-transferable. Total waste of time in regards to transferring within one year, although it may be of interest to you. UCs also strongly emphasize finishing all courses the spring semester before your transfer. It seems a big gamble to take a pre-req during the summer, unless it’s only suggested.

I really don’t know strategy for hard/easy classes distribution over semesters. I think those 7-9 classes are really solid classes, and with art/music in there it won’t be so impossible to balance that. Not to knock art/music majors, because I was prevsly an art major… ah! I think it’s just important to know your limits so you can take as many solid courses as possible along with not killing yourself maintaining a GPA that satisfies you.

(I’m attempting to be a one year transfer right now. I’m not applying directly from high school, but I’m also relying on a lot of AP credit to get through IGETC. I know there are a few attempting one year transfers right now on collegeconfidential… maybe some will have better advice? Good luck!)

@ucletsgo. I applied to Cal as a 1 year CS transfer. Im getting my decision in 12 days. I’ll let you know how that goes. I have 12 graded UC transferrable (13 total) courses for UC Berkeley to look at. By the way, sorry for being nosy, but you seem to be pretty on it with your schoolwork. Why not go to UCB as a freshman or possibly a diff school?
