Hi! Ever since last year, I’ve been considering transferring high schools starting 11th Grade. Where I’m from (Philippines), High School is divided into two parts: Junior High and Senior High. The former corresponding to Grades 7-10 while the latter referring to Grades 11-12. The K-12 system was only implemented quite recently so the existing Senior High at my school is only 2 years old. Because of this, I’m unsure of how rigorous the academics is or what the education quality is like. This is a reason why I know some students from my school opt to transfer for Grade 11.
With my end goal in mind of studying abroad in the US, I’m having a really tough time choosing between staying in my current school or transferring. My current school is a private, all-girls, Catholic institution with around only 100 students in my batch/level/class. I belong to the top 10% of my class and hold several leadership positions. I’ve also already formed close relationships with my teachers which could play a factor in the writing of my recommendation letters. It also has a really good reputation in my country. The reason why I want to transfer is because I feel the academics, while extremely difficult, is not enough to prepare me for college. Also, the environment has been feeling quite boring and slow-paced in my school.
The two other options I’ve been exploring (besides remaining in my school) are either transferring to a Senior High program in an established university here in the Philippines or moving to a small international school (which has AP classes). I feel both would challenge me a lot more than my current school. However, I’d lose all my leadership positions and would have to adjust academically and socially. I would say I adapt quick but I can never know for sure without experiencing the difference. When I apply for colleges in the US, would it seem odd that I transferred for Grade 11? What other pros and cons should I consider before making my decision of staying or transferring? If I do transfer, what difficulties will I face when applying? Do you have any advice for people in my situation? However, if I do end up transferring, what should I do to make sure I stay consistent holistically and stand out in my application? Do you think moving will jeopardize having good grades? Thanks so much!
