I go to a crappy school called Stone Mountain high, which has ECs that I despise of, and is really not diverse at all. Out of these last two years, my gpa is like a 3.2, and I don’t want to risk being here another year to jeopardize my chances at college. I take high school seriously, but all the stress that is put on me makes me lose my focus. Also, everyone their thinks that I’m this and that, which makes for feel so unhappy since all I ever want to do is fit in and be a normal teen.
My high school has no IB program, and when I argue to mom about how serious this problem is, she tells me, oh, you have only two years left, you’ll be okay. I tell her that we don’t even live near the school and that in senior year there going to implement uniforms, which I really hate the most. I also tell her that there’s no such thing as next time, as there’s no going back to these years that has passed, yet she still doesn’t want to do anything.
I really would like to know if the kind of high school you go to matters, cause my mom is playing the OK game with me. Tell me if you think it’s okay for everyone to just treat me like crap, to be around other people that aren’t planning to go to college, and to be in a school where there’s always fights. Like they make us not wear book bags for a whole week during the last week of school and during a 3 day stretch of April fools. I really hope I have a shot at college, cause I know junior year colleges look at that for real.
Solely in terms of college admissions, it doesn’t really matter what school you go to. They would rather see that you took full advantage of your oppurtunities at a lesser school than not at a better school. My school doesn’t have IB either, but we send plenty of people to good schools. Just take all the APs you can manage.
On a personal level, if you’re being bullied and are unhappy, then that’s a valid reason to transfer. If your current school is inhibiting you academically and socially, then I’d support a transfer.
I had the same issue! Here’s my story:
I went to a public high school until April of freshman year, I transferred to an “alternative” school because of bullying. I hated this school, the work was unbelievably easy! Many of the students at this school had emotional issues, and weren’t really focused on learning. These students somehow still made the honor roll, while I was being bored to death in these classes that were similar to grammar school. There were no AP or honors classes, extremely smart students were in classes with students who did NOTHING. Everyone was so proud of my 3.9 GPA, but I felt like I was accomplishing nothing. When I finally left this school, the staff actually admitted to my parent that they’re only meeting the minimum requirements!
I finally transferred to my new public school (I moved during this, so I didn’t return to the first public school). This public school is actually rated extremely low, but it’s what you make of it. There are at least AP classes, which I probably would be in if I hadn’t missed a year and a half of a normal curriculum. This school does have fights, security guards, and uniforms, but at least a few students do try to learn. (NJ has areas that are much worse than the “ghettos” of most states, and the most dangerous US city is here). In my opinion, getting good grades in a “bad” school is better than good grades in a private school that’s extremely unchallenging. Your mom should let you transfer if you’re this unhappy, and worried about college.
