Here is the question I have yet to find a definitive answer on:

I am looking to transfer out of a University here in Michigan. I have been accepted to University of Arizona. I know UofA has different rates for OOS students which I am fully willing to pay those rates. What I want to know is if I move to Arizona ONLY for school and do not work (therefore make no income) is it possible to maintain residency in Michigan? The reason I am asking is because I am pre-med and one of the schools I will be applying to is Michigan State College of Osteopathic Medicine. The reason I want to maintain residency in Michigan is because MSUCOM has one of the highest tuition rates for OOS students.

I am not sure if this is at all possible, but if it is I would like to take a stab at it. I am not looking to "scam" the system and be dishonest, especially when moving into a professional field. That is why I am going to pay the OOS tuition rates at Arizona.

I really am not sure how any of this works, so any information would be greatly appreciated!

I am 29. I am an independent student. My family has a vacant house outside Tucson that I can stay in while I am in state.

This is what the AZ DMV states: “Out-of-state students enrolled with seven or more semester hours, are not considered Arizona residents, regardless of employment.”

So I guess in the sense of this, I can maintain my Michigan residence, if I stay in school more than seven semester hours and pay OOS tuition and even work.

Just wondering if anyone else has ever done this process before.

You need to check the U of MI rules, NOT the AZ rules. Each state and many Us have their own rules about what IS and IS NOT residency. Just because AZ doesn’t consider you a resident doesn’t mean that MI will continue to consider you a resident. Try to get in WRITING what you have to do to maintain your MI residence for U of MI, if that’s important to you.

Since you’re specifically interested in U of MI med school residency, call them and ask them this question and ask where you can get specific written information about their residency requirements because you want to retain your residency while attending an OOS undergrad U, just as you’ve explained. This will help eliminate any surprises to you and you can plan accordingly.
