So when i applied to UM i had to apply as out of state (well they classified me as oos and i applied for residency and got it) bc i was born in Virginia... yeah dont know why since i have lived in MI since i was 9 months old... But my family is moving to NC at the end of the week due to my dad buying a new company and i want to now what will affect my residency more. I will be a junior this year. So what will have more affect on my tuition:

My parents moving OOS - due to me still being a dependent and living with them most of the time.

Me owning a company in MI - i own a company up in GR but i will live with my fam in NC.

I have called the residential life office but thye keep giving me conflicting answers. If it means i will be classified as OOS i will just live up here next summer, but i am just curious.

I moved here in 2005 and am instate. I think if your parents ever paid MI taxes you’re instate. I don’t know what the issue is but you should be considered instate.

I am considered in state now after applying for residency but i applied for the Ford School during soph year and they did a degree audit at the time at which my residency was reclassified as OOS. They didn’t tell me why but i had to go through the residency appeal process again. It’s a pain.

If you have had to already go through the residency classification process and won, I would personally not do anything to jeopardize that standing. As you know, residency is a very sticky (and stringent) issue at U of M. The business and taxes in and of themselves do not equate with residency as defined by U of M. Keeping your family address and remaining here should but no guarantee that submitting fafsa info would not undo same if both parents move to nc. Can you get a sit-down session with someone higher than front line at the registrars office? Might be worth it (to the tune of $22k/year : )

From what I’m reading, it seems that you are currently paying instate tuition [assuming that you sent in residency forms after being stated as OOS]. Since you’ve already been declared instate, you no longer need to show that you are instate. For financial aid, your parents simply need to fill out fafsa which does not say anything about residency, etc. That said, leaving your situation as is, will leave you with instate tuition.
