Hi, I’m a first time freshmen at CSU San Marcos for Fall 2016 and I’ve been attending classes for about 5-6 weeks now and I don’t feel happy in my classes, the environment, or in California anymore. I do not dorm on campus and I commute from home about an hour drive 3x a week for college to save money. I am also currently using my dad’s Post 9/11 GI Bill so I don’t pay for tuition/fees and books. I just don’t feel happy with where I am in college and I want to transfer somewhere new in the East coast preferably, New York to give an example. Will my college let me transfer out with only 12 credits or should I stay for one more semester? Will East coast colleges take me if I only attended my past school for one semester? Would I apply as a first time freshmen or a transfer student? I just need advice on what to do to get where I want. I don’t want to keep wasting my Post 9/11 GI Bill on a college i’m not happy with and I want to transfer out as soon as possible. What is the best and smartest way to do this?
Look on commonapp for colleges that accept Spring transfers (check “Spring 2017” and “transfer”). Once you have the list, email the colleges to know if they accept the Post 9/11 GI Bill. Cross the colleges that don’t.
I know that St Michael’s, a good college in a cool college town (Burlington, Vermont), accepts Spring transfers.
What are your stats?
Even if primary criterion will be high school stats (GPA, course rigor, test scores), your first semester results will count. Make sure to go to office hours for every class and ask the professor what you should do as a priority in order to improve.
If you want a good school to transfer to for veterans, look into UNC Wilmington. Very military-friendly university and also known for having a lot of inward transfers.
Apply quickly, though. The deadline is the 15th.
