Transferring out of jhu

I'm a freshmen at the johns hopkins university and I'm looking to transfer out. Looking to transfer to brown or columbia.

College first semester gpa was pretty low (3.5) but got As in both of my anthropology classes (my major). I compete in varsity track at hopkins and will continue to do so at my transfer school. Also am a newspaper editor, tourguide and woodrow wilson scholar. Had a 3.8 uw gpa at a top private high school. Looking to transfer because brown/columbia have stronger programs for my major. I know i have a low college gpa, but will getting As in classes for my major help? do i have a shot?

Thanks

Did you apply as an entering fr, and if so, what were your results?

Also, I have no idea about what place sports plays in transfer applicants, so any comments might be completely off base if you have the pull of a coach with clout in admissions.

didn’t apply to columbia. waitlisted for brown and chose not to get off the waitlist and go to jhu instead.

If you had been denied at one or both last year, I would have predicted that you have very little chance as a soph transfer with a relatively low transfer gpa. Since it looks like you were at least a competitive candidate last year, that’s better. It’s probably worth trying, but I wouldn’t be too optimistic.

If you wouldn’t mind staying another year at JHU, you could just go with those two, but if you really want to leave, I suggest you also apply to some slightly less selective colleges that fit your needs.

Also, if you are applying for FA, be aware that B is need-AWARE for transfer applicants and has limited FA for transfers:

I’m also applying to transfer out of JHU to the same schools. I’d love to talk to you. Maybe PM me?

I love JHU… but not confident enough to apply as a transfer student… I’m really curious about why you wanna transfer out?

JHU has been AWESOME for me. Please by all means apply. My issues with the school are things I can’t really help. It just wasn’t a great fit for matured me. The major I’ve fallen in love with, evolutionary bio, isn’t offered. That is the main reason for my transfer apps. The only issue I had that’s not major based is that I’ve noticed a lot of students come to Hopkins and do nothing but study. I’m a dedicated student but even I get of the library to go cultural events. A lot of kids don’t. It’s really my preference to go to school with less ‘one-track’ students.

I’d say talk to your coach, go over the NCAA rules for transferring. Email/call/visit the coaches at the schools you are interested in, you probably have to get release, but since track season is coming up I’m not sure how that works. Admission-wise, I think being a varsity student athlete will only help your chances.
