Transferring Schools. Worth it or not?

I really am torn about transferring to U of M Ann Arbor. I currently go to U of M Dearborn, are already in my junior year but because I switched my major to computer science last semester, they consider me a sophomore. So I am already a semester behind, and this semester I took two upper level CS courses that are the basic foundations for the remainder of the CS classes I’m required to take.

Long story short, I got accepted into Ann Arbor for next semester, but they want me to REDO those foundation courses AGAIN just because they feel like the Dearborn campus doesn’t go into the depth that their school does (even though they cover the same topics and the syllabi are the EXACT freaking same). I tried everything to petition it but they shut every door in my face.

I don’t know whether to transfer and sacrifice another semester and basically take 6 years to graduate just for my BS in CS at LSA in U of M Ann Arbor. I basically am choosing between paying double what I pay at UMD to retake the same courses for a semester (not counting housing and parking). My question is, is it worth sucking it up for a semester and transferring? Is there really a huge difference between the two schools in terms of getting jobs? Will I be offered a huge range of jobs if I graduate from UM AA that I won’t get if I graduate from UMD? And salary difference too? I really am 50 50 and yes I know UM AA is a great school, but I don’t know if its worth paying to retake the same courses and wasting a semester if the end result from both schools will be the same. Please respond when you guys can.

PS, please don’t give me that elitist answer that I’ve seen on so many different forums on here that UMD is absolute garbage and that UM AA is so phenomenal that I shouldn’t even be considering staying. I need real actual answers that will aid me in my decision. Thank you.

You should contact AA departments and admissions and get the actual facts /numbers. There is a reason that AA won’t let some credits transfer and you will have to be realistic on that front. It’s a shame they call the other campuses a Michigan campus but treat it like any other community college when it comes to credits. AA is going to be more difficult also even though you are going to one of their sister schools. It’s just not the same.

Behind what? Many don’t graduate in 4 years and your young. It comes down to ROI… Does it make financial sense to transfer? What jobs are students getting after graduating Dearborn? Compare that to what jobs students at AA are getting. But realistically I would look at those positions 5 years down the line. That might be what really stands out.

Do you have the money or would you need to borrow the difference?

Yes, the degree’s prestige, AA’s career services, and the kind of companies that recruit there won’t be the same as at Dearborn.
They know it and they make you pay for it by accepting very few credits from any other College. There was a student here on CC who’d been totally screwed because they’d counted her cc credits to charge her more but counted them as general electives that didn’t count for any major.

Anyway, are you happy with your internship opportunities at UMD? Have you worked with career services yet?
