Transferring this faIl, taking a non required course, thinking about dropping it for a W. Bad idea?

I am a comp sci major and I am trying to go to UCSC , UCI, or UCSD

I am taking a non required course in hopes of getting into UCSB, but it is just too difficult and I am thinking UCSB wouldn’t accept me anyways.

What are my options? If I continue through the course will it matter if I drop for a W either before or after any admission decisions?

I don’t really want to drop for a W before my admission decision, because wont they look at that and think bad about it? Or will it 100% not matter?

It really depends on the situation
Will you have 60 units without this class? You said it’s not a prereq, but is it for IGETC?
If you WON’T have 60 units without this class then no, do not drop… the 60 unit thing is not a “flexible” requirement. You absolutely have to have at least 60 units by the end of spring
If it’s not a prereq but it’s for IGETC completion, you might really wanna just stick it through. Getting that IGETC certification can be pretty huge depending on the school/major. Although this is purely anecdotal, I’ve heard that if a student’s major isn’t impacted at UCSB, they can get in as long as they have IGETC done and a good GPA, even if they’re missing a ton of prereqs
That being said, if it is for IGETC/ 60 units or both, consider taking it as the P/NP option. The P/NP option gives you the credit for the course as long as you get a C in the class, but it doesn’t effect your GPA. You wanna check with your counselor before you make this decision tho, as there are certain limitations to the P/NP option depending on your CC.
Also, idk if you’re in a semester or quarter system, but if you’re in a semester system like me, keep in mind that the results will be out before the deadline to get a W in the class. So basically, when the results come out and you didn’t get into a college you’re happy with and decide on staying an extra year at CC, you can always just drop then.
Either way, you really wanna talk to a counselor, and call admissions office to ask them.

I have IGETC done, I have like 80-90 units too :(. Idk why I took this course, I just looked at UCSC admissions acceptance agreement and it says if you’re accepted than they expect you to complete each course you listed for a letter grade.

Call them ASAP and find out. If its not required for ANYTHING, and considering how many units you have completed, I don’t see why it’d be a big deal to drop. I think when they say that, they’re mainly talking about courses that either contribute to prereq completion or IGETC certification. You have to consider that most applicants don’t have 90 units done and every single classes is meant for something lol.
If they say you have to have it done, you should honestly just take it P/NP. I’m sure getting a C in the class won’t be too hard
Idk why they’d be so strict tho if the course is not meant for anything tho, considering how many people change around their schedules after turning in the TAU. (myself included)

I’ll try to contact them, course is physics3 btw

Be sure to read and follow the requirements for notifying them of any changes in your schedule that you can find at

Yeah looks like contacting each school (Calling) sounds like your best option now. Is it too late to pass/no pass the class? that could be an option, too.

Yeah pass/no pass would probably be the best bet since it’s not required for anything. Did you ever figure this out?

I was actually in the same situation as you. I decided to take a W but I’ll have over 100 something quarter units before I transfer. So, that side it was not impacted. Also, it was not part of the pre-reqs. I talked to counselor and many students who have transferred said I am fine as long as it is not a pre-req and I have 90 quarter units. But It might impact chance to get into impacted major in some UC (UCB or UCLA) . If you tagged and have all the requirements ( IGETC and Pre-reqs) for UCSB then you should be fine.
