Transferring to a School I was previously accepted to, can I get my merit scholarship back?

So in high school, I was crazy about CU boulder and I got in with a 15,000 annual scholarship, but due to some family issues I ended up at a different college and really regret that decision, not just because of my campus life, but mostly because CU boulder has my dream program and my current program just is not cutting it. The difference in cost after transferring would be the same without the scholarship, but I will most likely have to do summers and take extra classes in order to graduate on time, increasing the overall cost of attending. The transfer scholarships are not as good as the merit one I got last year so…

  1. has anyone who has transferred has any experiences appealing their financial aid in order to get a merit scholarship they had earned as an incoming freshman, what was the result?

  2. How did you format your appeal letter?

Even though this is about CU boulder, if anyone from any school could weigh in I would greatly appreciate it!

Many/most merit scholarships are offered to freshmen to get them to attend. There isn’t usually the same desire to lure transfers so they get none or smaller merit aid. I doubt you’ll get anywhere with your request. The money isn’t just hanging around waiting for you.

You’re no longer a freshman, so if the grant was for freshmen then you’re no longer eligible for it. The only transfer grants I see on their website are for $1,000/year. You can contact them to ask if any additional grants are available, but be prepared for them to say no.

If you do transfer and have to take summer classes, can you commute to a cc to cut down on costs? Students here do that a lot.

My D transferred after freshman year and several of the original schools to which she applied honored the merit aid from the year prior.

Isn’t Boulder is public state university? It means they’re funded by taxpayer funds, which disappear quickly. I doubt they can afford to fund your original merit, but you can always ask.

Yes, definitely ask. And let us know what happens. Good luck.

Thanks everyone! I’m definitely pessimistic about getting it back but I’ll definitely try and we’ll see what happens
