Transferring to Bowdoin

hi,

i am a senior in high school and making a decision about what school ill be attending. the schools that i was accepted to are lower tier and i’d like to transfer for sophmore year, next year (if i end up not liking the school that i attend) to a more competitive school like bowdoin.

here are my stats.

black female

3.8 high school gpa

SAT- 1500ish (with all 3 parts…which i know is bad) SATII: 610 lit; 630 spanish; 560 Math

IB Diploma Programme member; all classes AP or IB

ECs- president of young dems. and mock trial
2nd vp- of model un
publicist- human rights club
captain- girls varsity shot and disc
involved in: hundreds of hours of community service and several other clubs. have worked at retail store 13hrs/per week for almost two years.

that being said- i failed a math class last year and this year i will most likely get a d in my physics class

i am going to attend a much less rigourous college and expect to do well…im going for a 3.8-4.0 freshman gpa (which i know will be difficult to do…but assuming that i do…)

do i have a chance for sophmore admission?

thanks.

In general, it's very difficult to get into a prestigious liberal arts college as a transfer student. Such schools are small to begin with, and relatively few students drop out or transfer out, so there are few slots available. But demand for those slots is high. So transfer acceptance rates tend to be even lower than the regular acceptance rates.

You can review the transfer admission stats at collegeboard.com. According to this source, Bowdoin accepted 14 transfers out of 113 transfer applicants. So this is a transfer acceptance rate of about 12.4%, compared to the regular Bowdoin acceptance rate of 25%.

You should improve your SAT scores, that would help a lot when transferring.

Does Bowdoin require that transfer students submit SAT scores?

thanks for the replies! ive seen the stat. of 14 people acccepted...but i was wondering a/b the applicant pool...are they coming from community colleges, states schools, ivy's? ...anyone know?

I know people from Mt Holyoke and Smith

I'm currently trying to transfer from Cornell (engineering). Just one example though. From what I've gathered so far, it is considerably harder to transfer than to be admitted as a freshman.

There's someone in my french class from Mt. Holyoke..I think. I don't think it's particularly easy to transfer.

Very difficult to get into Bowdoin as a transfer. This year they have over 200 applicants for 8 spots.

anyone have any stats...from the accepted people?

I was just accepted as a transfer from Smith. If you want stats, I'll give them. But I don't think they're really the most relevent thing -I think the stronger point of my application was that I showed I was passionate and involved in my activities, and I wrote thoughtful essays. Also, I think you should really focus on just enjoying your first year of college and making the most out of it, rather than being convinced you want to transfer. There're a lot of "lower" tier schools from which you can go anywhere upon graduation if you work hard enough as an undergraduate. If you get too idealistic about what transferring to these "upper-tier" schools will be like, you may very well end up being disappointed, b/c even if you're accepted nowhere is perfect. You really won't have a clue what works for you best until you've been in college awhile, and even then things change.

Now, my stats:

I have had 3 college semesters so far.
GPA: 3.35 (but I did have mono, so it was more 3.6 during the semesters I didn't, and I was taking primarily upper-level classes)
SAT: 780 Reading, 700 Math
SATII: 760 Math 2, 720 Bio-E, 710 Writing

High school record was ok, but not outstanding. GPA probably 3.3 with improvement at a very challenging charter school.

I did some research with a professor and designed my own project, though not for publication.

I was an organizer in some student environmental activism, and also volunteered with some student orgs and as a tutor for youth in the community shelter.

I worked as a minimum-wage social worker.
