Transferring to Clemson?

I am an our of state student from New Hampshire and I am really hoping and trying to get into Clemson. I think it is my dream school, although hopefully not out of reach. I am at my local community college this year, it is a long story, but basically I got accepted to a bunch of schools, made a deposit on one then withdrew when I realized I really didn't like any of the local places I applied and so I am trying to go away for school since I know it will be a good experience.

I had good grades in high school (3.45 GPA) but they weren't like ivy league status. What hurt me was my SATs, I got like an 1100 on the math and verbal, around 550 for each section.

I have family who went to Clemson a few years ago before they became VERY selective and were just a great school to go to and they said it was much easier to transfer than to be accepted right out of high school. I am only doing one year at the community college and then transferring, I just hope it's the place I want to be at.

So what I want to hear from people with some experience is how is transferring to the school? I have already talked to admissions to get the number of transfer credits I need and the classes I should take but I will be going in as a Psychology major. What kind of GPA will I need to get in my freshman year to hopefully transfer? I know a 3.5-3.7 is definatly possible and 4.0 could happen if I work hard enough. What do they look for in transfer students?

Hey Bobby!

Clemson recommends a 3.0 GPA to transfer into Clemson so if you can get a 3.5-3.7 that would really increase your chances of getting into Clemson! Legacy/alumni relation is a factor in the application process so maybe that might help you get your foot in the door as well. You will need to have 30 credits of transferable credits and will need to have taken freshman year classes equivalent to the english, science, and mathematics classes required in your major freshman year at Clemson.

Pierre, I have like two more questions and that’s it =P

Umm, I emailed admissions and I never got a response so I will call them if you don’t know but basically my term ends in May (7th I think) but it’s the frst week of May and I am curious whether I am supposed to like apply in February or March and get a decision and then see whether my credits transfer or am I supposed to wait and get all my grades and stuff before sending away my transcript? I am just unsure if it works like senior year where you apply and they give you a decision and then you send your second semester grades later or if I am supposed to do everything and then send out a whole freshman year transcript?

My other question is about residency, will it help or hurt that I am from out of state? Especially a smaller state that probably doesn’t produce a bunch of Clemson students.

The deadline to apply to transfer next fall is July 1st so they want you to apply with your final transcript for freshman year.

I don’t think it matters what state you are from. Usually the out of state and in-state admission rates aren’t that far apart depending on the year (more in-state students since a higher percentage pick Clemson compared to out-of-state students)
