Transferring To Elite School Chances/Worth it?

Hi all,

Firs time here. Current a Sophomore at a notsogreat liberal arts school in the Great Boston area. Anyways, my stats are:

GPA: 3.90 (expecting after finals)
Credits: 41 (catching up in spring)
Courses: Relying mostly on humanities, less science/math courses.

Highschool ACT: 29
Highschool GPA wieghted on 5 scale: 3.33

Extra curriculars: About average, have a few cool things that might make me stand out of the pack, but hard to tell.

I’m not looking for any reality checks, disses, or anything along that nature (although I assume I may get some). I am a down-to-earth person so I am really just really wondering if I would have a chance applying to places like Williams or Harvard (I know both are extremely hard to transfer into). Fortunately, I was already accepted to a pretty good school after my Freshman year of college (sub-30 national rankings), but I really would like to give a shot at the top schools.

Anyways, i’m here to answer any clarifying questions, I just want to know if I am wasting my time, or if I would have a chance. And, if I go forward my heart would be totally set, I just want to know if the game is worth getting into. If you have any prior experience, suggestions etc. i’m all ears.

Thank you

A friend of mine transferred to Yale after 2 years of Community College in MA with almost all A’s about 5 years ago. He was also involved in student government and starting a couple successful of clubs there…so it’s possible. He did very well at Yale too. He went to CC because of income and also had an excellent high school transcript. You might think of applying to some of the fine, larger schools that most likely offer more transfer seats (BU, UMass-Amherst, Northeastern too). Williams is so small that they probably only offer a few transfer seats each year, but you’ll never know until you try. Good luck!

Yes! Try and see what happens. You may surprise yourself.

Thanks, if anyone has any insight in the process (I have read a bunch of other threads), please feel free to add it here or link me some reading material. Thanks again.

Why did you not transfer to the top 30 school that accepted you last year?

I got in partly because I knew some faculty and they put in a good word. Although my GPA was a 3.8+, so I probably would not have gotten in otherwise. Plus, i’m getting a decent deal where I am, so if I go, I want to go for a top school (not trying to bash the sub-30 school). Thanks.
