Transferring to J-School

Hello

I was accepted to Missouri as an undecided major, but I am very interested in the journalism school. How and how hard is it to transfer into the journalism school? Thanks

I’m not an expert but I know that you can transfer into the school after 2 years. Apparently a very small number of freshman applicants get into the journalism school straight out of high school so it’s not impossible to get in once you’re a student there.

No one really gets into the journalism school out of high school. The people who are direct admits are just given a big medal that says they’re in the journalism school, but in reality, you’re not, until you get accepted into your sequence.

You have to declare yourself as a pre-journalism major. Then you just take the four introductory journalism courses (career exploration, Principles, Cross Cultural, and News) like everyone else, while finishing off the pre-sequence checklist, just like everyone else who is called a journalism major.

And then during Fall Semester of your sophomore year you apply for your sequence. I’m not really sure what GPA they use (it’s either after the third or fourth semester that they use the GPA for).

All of the pre-journalism and journalism students are then in the same pool. Having that special distinction as a journalism major doesn’t actually matter at all. They then just rank all of these students by GPA, and then just start putting people into their preference based on who has the highest GPA.

That is for the most part. But before you’re in your sequences courses you may start taking some of the sequences courses early, at which point they develop a relationship with some of the instructors in that sequence. So some people whose GPA might not have been up to snuff for their preferred sequence can still get in thanks to a little faculty help, but this is definitely the exception rather than the rule.

Just go out and get a good GPA your first two years, and you’ll get into the Journalism school and the sequence of your choice.

So i will still have the option to take journalism courses in my first 2 years?

Yes, you can.
First semester: Career exploration
Second: Principles and so on.
