Transferring to Ohio State w/ a bad GPA. What are my chances?

First, I want to say that I have copied the question from my previous post because I believe that it may have been the wrong forum. For that, I apologize.

Anways, hello everyone, I am a current student attending a 4-year university in the state of Florida, and I am moving to Columbus, Ohio after next Fall for family reasons. Here is my situation. Earlier this year, I graduated with my AA from a community college, and then I transferred to the University of Central Florida. However, due to some extenuating circumstances with my family, I had to pick up a lot of work to help out my family with medical bills and other things. I was dumb, and during this, I kept taking full courseloads of work and my GPA began to plummet with failing physics 1 3 separate times and failing calc 2 twice. I have documentation for everything that my family went through including a full hip replacement by my mother and a heart attack by my father law. It was a lot that happened. My last 4 semesters or so combined have had an average of maybe a 1.7 GPA, and I am completely embarrassed by that. My overall GPA is now sitting at roughly a 2.83, and after next Fall I am looking to transfer to Ohio State. I am worried that with this GPA, I will not be accepted. I do plan to continue to attend UCF for the next year to get my GPA up before we move, and I plan on taking some advanced classes including differential equations and physics 3 (I am a dual physics and chemistry major). My goal, of course, is to ace everything, and according to my calculations, as long as I do just that, I should be able to bring my GPA up to about a 3.13. I am also a very active member within my community volunteering at local soup kitchens, hospitals, and animal shelters on a weekly basis if that is of any relevance to Ohio State’s admission process. I have also aided with many hurricane relief efforts, and well, I just try to do everything I can to help. I work a job as well, and I pay for everything out of pocket. With all of this being said, do you think that I have a good chance at getting accepted as a transfer student into Ohio State University?

Bump. Anyone? I could really use the help!

Bump

I guess no advice ?

What advice are you looking for? All I see is a question… “do you think that I have a good chance”. I don’t know what OSU transfer acceptances are like, so I can only say good luck.

If you retake a few classes, you can raise that GPA back up very quickly. But the most glaring question, why are you transferring all the way up there to begin with? That’s insane. The out of state tuition is almost 5 times what you’re paying at UCF. The other problem with transferring is that credits don’t normally transfer. There’s limits on how much financial aid you can take out for a 4 year degree. If you have to work to pay family medical bills, I’m thinking that your parents won’t have the money to pay that kind of tuition bill, and it would be very unlikely they have the credit to co-sign private loans over to you.

In other words, it doesn’t matter how good/bad your grades are. You couldn’t afford to go there anyway, even if you got in. And even if you got in, you would lose most your credits, and have to retake classes at an extra cost of tens of thousands. Seriously, you’re better off just staying at UCF.

@coolguy40 your assumption is quite annoying and dumb to say I couldn’t afford it. I have worked and saved an immense amount of money to pay for my education. I am also former military. I already know the costs, and I know 100% that I could afford it. Please keep the insulting, baseless assumptions to yourself. Financial Aid is irrelevant to me, and I mentioned why I am moving there within the first couple of sentences. I asked for opinions on my odds of acceptance, and if you can not offer that, please keep opinions to yourself.

I don’t mean to ruffle anyone, I tell it straight. Here’s my thoughts on this issue. Agree or disagree, it makes no difference to me. It’s GREAT that you’re a military veteran. You’re already pretty far along in your degree, you can save a lot of money and headache and finish your degree at UCF. No classes retaken, and it would be a small fraction of the cost you would otherwise have. If you have a lot of money saved up, then I might suggest using it for a masters degree, which, in my opinion, would be a far better value.

Also, Michigan is a tough school to get into, and the GPA is very much on the low side. You’re likely to be declined anyway.

@coolguy40 I don’t think you even read the post at all anymore. I’ve stated twice now why I am moving, staying at UCF is not an option, and it even says that I am looking to transfer to OHIO STATE in the question itself, not Michigan…

There are also numerous reports, also straight from Ohio State admissions themselves, that merely a 2.5 GPA is considered competitive for both the Physics and Chemistry departments as a transfer student. That being said, I asked to get other opinions on the chances of acceptance, not opinions on why someone thinks I’m wrong for moving.

I’m not very familiar with OOS students admission, so the information I can give you is based on what I know as an in-state transfer.

It will depend on your major and GPA if you will be directly admitted into your intended major. Don’t despair if you don’t reach the requirements of your major, you can still be admitted into OSU under exploratory studies until you fulfill the academic requirements of the intended major. Try to keep your GPA above a 2.5. You can look under OSU’s transfer enrollment criteria on their website for your specific major’s direct enrollment requirements. Majors also differ when it comes to how competitive it is to be directly enrolled.

If I were you, I would make sure to go to my writing center so I could focus on providing a strong personal statement about why I want to transfer specifically to OSU and explain why circumstances that involved my family affected my education. I would also make sure to provide all the activities, jobs, and community work you mentioned to show you are socially active within your community. If you can, ask 2 of your professors or community/ volunteer leaders for recommendations to submit on your behalf to OSU. They may be able to vouch that you have a good work ethic, deserve admittance, and you’ve gone through rough times. Turn in recommendations after you submit your application or they will be lost.

If you are denied admittance, I would call admissions and ask if there were any notes on your file about why you were denied or if they have any opinions. If they say you had a good application and there are no red flags, you can appeal the denial and the board will review your application once more. When I was denied I called admissions and was told there was an abundance of freshman admitted and there were not many spots for transfers for the semester I applied to. The man working admissions suggested I appeal. I did and I was accepted.

All that said I do think you have a good chance of being admitted if you keep up with your academics and work on perfecting your application. I hope that at least some of the information will be useful to you.
Hopefully, you are accepted! Good luck!

I think you’ll be ok. After reading many transfer posts and their admissions decisions for OSU, I think you have a good shot at getting in. As long as you keep a 2.8 or higher you should have a chance. Plus, they love out-of-states because they pay more money for tuition!

Welcome. For transfers, here is the info for admittance. If you are not able to get into main, try a branch and then transfer. http://undergrad.osu.edu/apply/transfer/admission-criteria

Also, you mentioned being a veteran. Here is info specific for veterans. http://undergrad.osu.edu/apply/information-for-veterans

Best of luck to you!
