I'm thinking of applying to Colby College for spring transfer. I was accepted for fall (off the waitlist) but turned them down due to money issues and being set on another place.

Will my previous acceptance have any effect on my chances of being accepted?

The acceptance rate for transfers is often (usually?) lower than it is for freshman. It depends on the school how they treat former applicants. I got rejected from a school as a transfer that wait listed me the first time around.

I definitely would try, however. My guess would be that they take fewer transfers in the spring semester than they do for fall, but your bet for accurate information of that would be Colby’s website and their admissions office. I think if you decide to go ahead for either spring of next fall, I would reference your previous admission and, while not going deeply into how you made the wrong choice when you got off their waitlist, be sure to speak to the many ways in which you have truly discovered that Colby is the right fit for you (also while not throwing dirt on your current institution).

It won’t have an “effect” so much as it will let you cut in front of the line. Of course it helps for them to know you were good enough the first time, and they will have a file on you.

Don’t rely on the fact, though. They’ll want to be assured that you have spent your time wisely regardless of where you attended or what happened to you after you turned them down.

On your Why transfer essay make sure to tell them your CURRENT state of mind and financials all align you to go to Colby.
