Transferring to top school from Umass Amherst

Hi everyone, this is my first time actually using College Confidential so I hope people actually respond to this post. I will be attending the Isenberg School of Management at Umass Amherst this year. I am very excited about attending Umass, but in all honestly, I feel like I messed up in parts of high school and that I should have aimed for a better school.

I basically want to know if it's actually possible to transfer to schools like Cornell, Boston College, NYU Stern, Georgetown, Duke, Upenn, possibly even Harvard (my Dad went to Harvard Business School if that could help) out of a state school like Umass. I know that it's possible, but I want to know if there is an actual possibility of it happening. Honestly, my high school stats aren't great. SAT was a Critical Reading: 610, Math: 700 and Writing: 670. And my GPA was terrible Freshman and Sophomore year with quite a few 70's on my transcript. My grades picked up Junior and Senior year to the 90's but that wasn't enough to get my GPA very high. I ended up with about a 3.2, which is what really screwed me over throughout the application process. Extracurricular's included Varsity soccer captain, travel soccer, I was the lead in 4 plays at my performing arts high school, I did 3 internships, Science tutoring once a week, co-manager of the arts and community service club. So my activities looked good, my SATs were okay but my GPA really hurt me.

So what I really want to know, is if I am able to get a 4.0 at Umass, get involved in clubs and do another internship or 2, would I actually have a chance at getting into some of these top schools or am I just dreaming unrealistically. And I know that getting a 4.0 isn't some easy task, but I'm just speaking hypothetically here.

I know some people will say "You should be happy you're at Umass and you shouldn't go to a school wanting to transfer". And I totally understand that, and I'm not necessarily saying that's what I want to do, but I just want to know if I have a chance at getting into these top 20 schools if I work hard enough for the next 2 years.

Thank you so much for anyone that responds to this post!

I think you could certainly transfer to some very good schools, but the very top schools will be a challenge. Many schools will accept slightly lower stats for transfers than they do for freshmen because the transfer scores will not be part of their freshman profile/ranking. Select classes carefully considering if the credits will easily transfer to another school’s curriculum. And realize that many schools do not offer financial aid to transfers, or the amount is reduced. You may find you love UMass, but it doesn’t hurt to consider alternatives, just in case.

Possible but super hard. Harvard’s transfer acceptance is like <3% or something. Stern took 25 external out of over a 1000+ transfer applicants so ~2.5%. Cornell’s is high, BC’s is probably high, and not sure about Georgetown’s.
