Chances of transferring from a state school to top schools?

I didn't do so well in high school so I'm planning on going to Umass Amherst next semester, but I would like to transfer out. What are my chances of getting into a top 40 school if I were to have a strong GPA (3.8ish), good recommendations, with decent EC (work study, clubs, and I'll see what else I'll do) and I apply for transfer for my junior year?

My high school GPA is extremely low, like a 3.3 and my SATs were decent: 1980. If I applied for transfer for my junior year, will the colleges still judge closely on my high school career? Also what can improve my chances of transfer?

if you have a high GPA in Umass Amherst and great EC’s plus recommendations then you should be fine. all colleges will look at your HS record but not as closely as your college record. some may ask for SAT’s but usually they’re not required to be sent out. as long as you do good in college and involve yourself in as many things as possible then you should be fine when transferring. don’t forget to have a killer essay when transferring!!! extremely important.
hope this helps. good luck.
