I was accepted as an incoming freshmen to the Cockerell School of Engineering, but I declined the offer, and instead went to the University of Alabama. I instantly regretted this decision and now want to transfer to the University of Texas. Is this at all possible? I'm taking 15 hours of credit work this semester at Alabama, and I have 12 hours of dual credit from high school. I also have passable grades on my AP Lang, AP stats, and AP Calculus tests. I was 7th in a class of 550 in high school but does that even mean anything anymore? I just need someone to talk me through this process. Thank you

Hi, gman, bummer you aren’t feeling at home yet at Alabama. As you can read, transfer eff. spring 2012 doesn’t look likely. You will be short a minimum of 3 hours; you will also need to match up your 27 course credits with what credits UT will accept for the required 30 for transfer. Hopefully, you are good to go on all 27 of the hours you’ll have at the end of this semester, and then you can be sure to enroll wisely come spring semester.

So…may I suggest you shelve this idea until winter break? You need to focus on your school work this fall (you’ll need a high GPA on your Bama coursework to get into Cockrell this time). Over break, if you are sure you want to make the move, you can put together a transfer app and meet the spring deadline for fall admission. You may also need to review the financial aspect with your family over break–Bama is known for extending merit monies to top students, including leveling the playing field for OOS students. If you benefited from that, paying full freight in-state will be something you and your family will need to plan for (especially considering the fact that the economy has changed things for many families in just the last year since you made all of your applications.)

In the meantime, get out there and give Alabama your best shot!

It is very common for students to feel “buyer’s remorse” at the beginning. You are not alone. And longing to be back in Texas at UT is understandable!

But…go back to that long list of reasons you decided to pick Bama over UT in the first place. And get out there and live them! Alabama is a terrific school, and I’m guessing you are probably well-situated in their engineering program.

Join in some ECs. Go to campus events. Force yourself to be a bit more extroverted if you have been hanging back.

Roll Tide!

does it not matter that I’m completing 30 hours this semester? Are there any other alternatives?

excuse me, 15 hours

You have to have the minimum of 30 hours completed for them to look at you. Unless you want to take 18 hours (which isn’t that bad), then you will not be considered at all b/c of the 30 hours. Ditto on what everything TXArtermis said. Just give Alabama a chance.

the AP courses don’t matter?

Oh, if Alabama and/or UT accepts then you would be fine. As long as you have at least 30 hours on your transcript.

I’m in the same boat (looking to transfer after one semester). From the sound of it you should have the required hours. Your semester work/dual credit combined with AP credits should put you over 30. I called the admissions offices at UT regarding AP credits. What they said was this: they will accept your credit as a course from the sending institution. In other words, you must claim your credit at Alabama and have it shown as a class on your transcript for which UT accepts credit.

I’m in the same boat as you guys. I’m a freshman at the University of Miami and am looking to transfer. I have 44 transferrable AP Credit hours, but the only thing is that I essentially don’t have a GPA. From what the admissions counselors told me, it sounds like if you have a transcript that says you have over 30 hours of credit then they will review your application and send you a decision. What worries me is that my current application is ALL AP credit since I don’t have a UM GPA until December, so I’m not really sure when I’ll receive a decision. Does anybody have any experience with this; a solely course-equivalency transcript with no official GPA? I’m hoping to get a decision before I go home for Winter break.

RGHelmcamp-
My situation is similar to yours. Unfortunately, we won’t find out till January. I spoke with someone from admissions and they said that they leave for the holidays so by the time you send your transcript in december they’ll be gone and won’t be back till the beginning of January and thats when they’ll look at your transcript and send you a decision. I think the lady said around the 10th if I’m not mistaken.

That’s so late
I’m worried that they will have admitted a lot of people by then and then well be after thoughts and be judged more on their physical abilities to admit us (number wise) instead of our actual qualifications. I’m applying to engineering, so I’m a little nervous about that being quite competitive.

From what I gather from my friends in Engineering, more than 2/3 of the people who want to get into any of the engineering programs get weeded out. For those who do get in, it is almost impossible to switch to other engineering majors, even internally amongst the different engineering majors. So you are not just competing amongst the transfer applicants, but also with the internal engineering transfers as well. Just two more things to consider…
