Transferring to Yale from UNC...

I was a senior in the class of '08 applicant pool and never actually applied to Yale.

I had a 3.7, 1430/2180, good rec, tons of great ECs/leadership.

I am from Chattanooga, TN and currently a freshman at UNC-Chapel Hill. I love UNC, but I really want a less-greek environment and to meet a more diverse group of people, and I definitely want to apply to transfer, even if I ultimately decide not to.

What sorts of stats do I need to be very competitive? What GPA? I am already getting pretty involved. Does that matter?

Thanks!

My sense is that typical freshman level involvement in ECs won't help you particularly; it's what the admissions office would expect to see. I'd aim for a 3.9ish GPA. Work hard to get to know a couple of professors so you can get good recs and seriously consider your "Why Yale?" transfer essay. Wanting to go to a less Greek school, for instance, won't be a compelling reason.

I agree with AA about gpa and what's going to be important for a transfer student. Also, since you're applying as a sop transfer, your HS record and test scores are gong to have more weight than what you do in college, as you will only have 1 sem/qt by the time you apply.

The transfer acceptance rate is even lower than for freshman, about 3-4% last year. Go to the Transfer Students forum and read the results thread from last year, there were several students that applied to Y and at least a couple who were accepted.
