Hi guys. Currently I'm a freshman majoring in Civil Engineering. My university is ranked 73rd in the country for their civil and environmental engineering program. Do you guys think it's much better for your resume if I transfer to a better ranked school for my major? Or is it not too much of an issue? I plan to transfer to one of the top 20 schools for civil engineering.

it doesn’t matter what’s your college’s ranking , it does matter if it’s accredited by the ABET or not.
an ABET accredited program is the best way to go for the undergraduate study.
when you wanna do your graduate study then move to the elite>>MIT,California tech,GT… etc
and if you are happy at your current univ then why you wanna transfer??
maybe you can go to mit but you won’t be happy there!!

note:
as I said above , an accredited program for the undergraduate is your best choice and it depends on you not on the college. the MIT can’t give anything more than your current college,unless we are talking about the job opportunities in the future.

cheers;

Am I missing something? Isn’t the purpose of attending a college/university, whatever your field of study, is to find meaningful employment?

What is the competition like for jobs in Civil Engineering? That would determine if you need to transfer.

What school are you at and who’s ranking system are you referring to?

Where do you think you’ll ultimately want to live?

Is there any place you will never live?

M

Ask yourself why you want to transfer. If it is because you are not comfortable at your current school, then definitely look into it. If is it because your current school is not ABET accredited, transferring is a good idea. If it is because students at your university don’t have internship or job opportunities, then transfer is a possibility. If it is because of somebody’s rankings, that is the least valid reason for a transfer.

@xraymancs:
totally agreed with you.

Thanks. My school (Texas Tech University) is ABET accredited and many of the engineering upperclassmen have good internships. Our university offers 2 job fairs, one in the fall and one in the spring semester for students to find internships and co-ops. I like it here a lot even though it’s kind of in a boring small city. But I don’t think that matters too much.

But I hear from some people that employers would like to see a good college name on the resume for the first job though… Is that as important as internship experience, GPA, extracurricular activities, etc?

@eyemgh It’s Texas Tech University and the ranking was from US News for our civil/ environmental department.

@yyaasseerr Thanks.

If money is not the concerns then try do transfer to private school like Johns Hopkins, Vanderbilt, USC, etc…they have very good engineering.

Texas Tech has a perfectly good engineering program. Don’t fret the rankings since graduates get good internships and jobs and if you want to go to graduate school, what matters most is your academic performance, not the school ranking.

OP: If I were you, I would not do any transfer. Just try to maintain high GPA like 3.7 cumulative and above then go for brand name University for Grad. School getting Master degree. Good luck.
