How difficult is it?

I think it's really easy. I'm not sure how, but I've heard that WashU is very very flexible.

The ease of transferring at WashU is one of the big pluses of attending the school. So many kids start out college thinking they know what they want to study and then find that they change their mind. WashU recognizes this and makes the transfer process very easy. I have never heard of a case where a student could not make the change. WashU prides itself on its flexibility and also makes it very easy for students to double major or major/minor within or across the different schools within WashU. So, for example you can be a Pre-med in Arts and Sciences and then take a second major or a minor in the Business, Art or Engineering school.

I was originally admitted in 2008 into the engineering school, as a prospective physics major. I'm not sure whose fault it was that I was put into that school (possibly my own, for sure) but the engineering school stopped offering that major a few years ago - now physics is in Arts & Sciences. I transferred schools over the summer before I started, and it was no trouble at all.

Now, a year later, I'm probably going to be switching back into the engineering school, as I'm thinking of double-majoring. From talking to my advisor, these transfers are incredibly easy. For your first couple years, it really doesn't even matter what school you're in, as you can take classes in whatever school you like. By the end of your sophomore year you'll want to pick a school and stick with it though: it's not that you can't switch after that, but it'll make it much easier for you to keep track of your graduation requirements.

Basically though, transferring just requires an email or two and a reason that isn't entirely whimsical.

My D started as a freshman last fall in the BME program. After the first day of classes, she transferred to Arts & Sciences. The hardest part about it was running around to get a few signatures (especially since it was just before Labor Day weekend so some profs were away). By the day after labor day, she had switched all her classes and her major.

Sorry to bring up this old thread, but I was just accepted into Olin. However, I'm feeling like arts and sciences might be a better fit for me. Everyone seems to think that the process is relatively easy to switch schools, but what does it entail? Should I contact them immediately or wait til next year roles around?

Well - see my post above. However, if you know now, I believe I've seen posts (like don_quixote above mine) where people switched in the summer before even getting there. Why do it now though? At least do like my D and go to the first day of classes! (haha).

Yeah, if you think you'd like to attend one of the ArtSci Summer sessions, that might be a reason to go ahead and switch. Other than that, it really won't make any difference (and in that case I'd advise just waiting it out).
