I’m from Aus too. But I came senior year so I just went to Uni here. If you got the grades you can do it. XD

Hey I’m not very familiar with the American system and its terminology senior year? So you were in an Australian school went to an aus uni and then transferred?

Nah mate, I was in Year 12, and I moved to the U.S (year 12 is senior year here). So I just went to uni here.
All schools take a number of International students, so if you got the grades, you will get in.
What part of Aus you in? And what schools do you wish to apply or have applied to?

Wow a person who uses the word mate! I don’t see that very often on the CCforum! I’m
In Melbourne studying at the university of Melbourne. I just started first year and planning on transferring to Wharton business or NYU in the second. However I’m not sure how complicated it will be given the different systems (uni starts at a different time here in aus as you probably already know to the American uni’s) subjects taken here are different too lol

Yeah but they have a really good way of giving you credit for similar classes.
Like in Aus, we have Civics and Geography and Maths. But here, math is split up into different portions like algebra, statistics etc.
International students have to supply a lot of forms and stuff but if you’re qualified, you will get in.
Classes start August here. End April/May.
Winter is December here. Summer is June/July.

Yea exactly so I have emailed Upenn admissions to see what they say. I will apply if I get the grades in uni. I did well in high school but uni is a whole different ball game. Fingers crossed everything goes well though! Thanks for the advice!

I wish you all the best.

you know it’s damn hard to get into Wharton as an international transfer…last year’s transfer rate for upenn was like 6% so you really need HD’s in all units to ensure that you’re academically qualified. some additional research + leadership activities will help too.

NYU is much easier, but you’ll have to pay more $$$

Ya I know it will be difficult. It won’t be easy, new York is damn expensive so I don’t know if it is a viable option but I’ll see how I go. They will want to see a solid SAT score as well I assume so we shall see how I go. I have only started uni and I’m on H1’s so I just have to keep on pushing!

And what do you mean by additional research. Also, what sort of leadership activities are we talking about here?

I know quite a few current 1st year students at great schools like Berkeley/ Wesleyan/ Carleton/Vanderbilt who are working their butts off to transfer to Ivies. What they typically do is: get a 3.97 GPA, beg professors for opportunities to work on research projects, become president/vp of some clubs, do some volunteering, and write mind-blowing transfer essays

Hmm I’ll see what I can do then. However, I am not that desperate, and it is likely that I will transfer later in the second year when I have met the prerequisites for entry, so I still have a long way to go.

Transfering to Penn is easier - and then from Penn you can try to transfer internally to Wharton. External transfers to wharton is very small. I was told each year its in the single digits. From around the world. If you can get an exchange here however, your chances will increase drastically.

Hey, interesting you say that because my university has an exchange program with Wharton; however, I was told that doing an exchange program at the school will not put me at any advantage. So who did you hear this from, and how is it possible that doing an exchange program will aid my transfer application.

I’m at Melbourne university atm; are you by any chance at Wharton and have transferred before?

Yea im a 2nd year there, but i got in from high school and not by transfering— which is 100% harder mate.

But if u get here for an exchange - I think you can adequately show admission officers that you have an interest beyond other applicants. And also, you can network and get people in the uni to vouch for you if ur good enough right? So remember that ur app is read by people, not machines. So things like coming here for exchange says a lot!

See next post

Granted, it is difficult; however, with the right support I think anything is possible. A 6% probability is not unheard of for a top institution, so it is expected. As for your point about an exchange program, it is a definite possibility, and I will be considering it.

I have emailed the director of admissions and he was nice and quite helpful, which is a good sign. I am just waiting now for the woman in charge of the Australia region to reply so then we can get the ball rolling.
