Hi everyone,

I'm considering applying to transfer from Davidson to Colgate. I understand that admissions is competitive, very tough, and in my own hands. However, I was actually wondering more about incorporation of transfer students into the student body. Is it easy for transfers to acclimate, especially considering the prevalence of sororities/fraternities, and the fact that most of the class is already in their Greek organization? If I end up at Colgate, I will want to rush.
Thanks so much for your input.

There is no particular problem that I am aware of – as a Colgate grad as well as the father of a current Colgate junior – that affects transfer students at Colgate. In fact, it’s a bit refreshing to meet new people at a small school where you feel you may have met everyone after a year or two (not true, of course).

As far as sororities and fraternities, their influence is somewhat exaggerated. There are colleges where frats are the only way to have a social life, but Colgate is not one of them. Colgate used to be one of them about forty years ago, but a lot has changed, and today only about 30%, give or take a little, join them. My daughter thought of joining, was offered a place, but declined, preferring apartment living with a group of friends. That’s a far more typical option for most students.

If you are sure you do want to join – and you don’t give the class year you are applying for – your best approach would be to contact the university to get their latest rules on this because Greek organization rules go through a lot of change, particularly in terms of rushing periods, eligibility and so forth over time. For all I know, today’s rules may differ from last year’s. Colgate’s website may have some of this spelled out for you. I’m not up on the details, and I don’t want to steer you wrong, so I suggest you choice one of these two options. Good luck!

Thanks so much for your help! I will definitely look at the eligibility standards-I didn’t even think of that. I will be applying to enter the Class of 2015 (sophomore) in Fall 2012.

Rush is sophomore year at Colgate, so you’re set.

Davodson and Colgate look quite similar on paper being SLACs. You really need to convince the adcoms why Colgate would be better for you and will meet your specific needs.
