HOW HARD IS IT TO FIT IN AS A TRANSFER????? (specifically to colgate)

I'm a very social girl who went to a very academic school because of its reputation. However, I have not made any fun friends nor have I had a happy exerpience. I made the mistake of staying here to try and make my situation better so I am now a second semester sophomore who wants to leave.

My GPA in high school was a 3.4 at a tough school (all AP's and honors), I had a 1510 on my SAT's, SAT II's: 710 on writing, 720 on U.S. History and 730 on Math, and I have had a 3.2 at Amherst College.

I am looking to apply to Colgate University because the people there seem much more my type and it seems like an active campus. More importantly, I love the fact that Colgate has a Greek system. They rush in the beginning of the year.

I was wondering if anyone could give me feedback on how difficult it would be to get accostumed to a new enivronment as a junior transfer....joining a good sororitiy, finding a group of friends despite the fact that many go abroad, getting my major together. I am not so much worried about getting in or dealing with the academics so much as I am about the social side of things....i know its a unique situation but someone PLEASE HELP

a 3.2 is not going to cut it for any top place, especially since ur high school record is near that (3.4), try to get ur college grades up to like a 3.6, and i think it could boost ur chances A LOT.

Thanks for the feedback but I'm not particularly worried about getting in....i've been in touch with the office and have been told that i would almost definitely get in....probably because i'm coming from a better school. My friend who transferred there also had similar stats.

i guess so, why would u want to transfer to Colgate from Amherst College, it is one of the best schools in the country?

I PM-ed you seeing as I'm a transfer at Colgate from the 5 College Area :)

bball87- yes, Amherst is a great place for education... not so for everything else, I think it's a turn-off for me. Student body- boring and self-centered.

I highly recommend Dartmouth, I transferred there. I think its perfect for you. I left Columbia for social reasons and Dartmouth exceeded my expectations beyond belief.

Its socially more fun than Colgate (I have hung out at Colgate), and yet has the same academics of Amherst: a lateral step instead of a negative one. There are plenty of people aren't boring, elitist, or nerdy (I don't know how many cool smart people can end up in one place). As a transfer it could not be easier to fit in for these reasons: 1) Can't rush greek until sophomore year anyway 2)!!!!!!!!! You can attend Sophomore summer as a junior transfer which is a great chance to meet YOUR entire class (sophomore summer is after sophomore year) this is by far Dartmouth's biggest advantage to you, 3) as a transfer you go to orientation with the first years- and other transfers so you meet a ton of them (also Dartmouth orientation is awesome) 4) its such a social and open school that everyone is welcome at every party, so you'll end up meeting people very quickly, 5) they treat transfers incredibly well and you get special advisors, etc.

I transferred as a sophomore but it seems like everyone knows the junior transfers since they hung out sophomore summer.

Since you are interested in the Greek scen, theoretically you could rush sophomore summer and by junior fall you'd already be in a sorority and could even help rushing the upcoming sophomores OR you could wait until the fall and rush with the sophomores (and there are always some juniors).

Seriously look into it. Dartmouth seems to be perfect for your situation. My only caveat is Dartmouth transfer admissions is difficult, so I am not sure how they would look at a 3.2. My advice is to try and boost this if you can,

It is funny that you recommend Dartmouth because I applied there early decision for my freshman year and got deferrred....and then rejected. I've been told they are very selective when it comes to transferring and considering I don't have a great g.p.a I just don't think I"d get in but I will look further into it now that you bring it to my attention. thank you very much!

Yeah I think the GPA thing might be the issue...but otherwise it would be perfect for you in terms of atmosphere. I am not sure how Colgate is, but I am guessing as a relatively small social school it shouldn't be too hard to fit in.
