Students who applied straight out of high school find it very competitive to gain admission. Only students in the top 20 with great extracurriculars got in from our school. One boy, a gifted student, was declined despite good grades, many college credits, and being a member of the National Honor Society. He went to another one of the state universities where he is doing well.

Amazingly. a girl who was a C student, only had one AP course- which she earned a C in, scored a 17 on her ACT and had sports ec's, but nothing else- was accepted. Her secret? She went to our local community college. There she was among a population which includes students who can't get into the universities. Some of those students were in high school remedial classes but had opportunity scholarships and such. She got her AA and- I'm guessing here- her lackluster transcripts were never glanced at by the admission committee. We are curious to know if she will be able to make it in a more competitive environment, but right now she is quite smug that she got into a school that wouldn't accept a gifted scholar.
