I'm thinking about attending the accepted students overnight stays in April, but my mom can't foot the bill due to another trip. Does the University provide cheap airfare tickets, or reduced price ones (even if they are crappy) as part of their financial aid? What if you are attending?

You could talk to admissions and see if they can help. If you live close enough to chicago, you may be able to megabus it. If you book early enough in advance, fares are ridiculously cheap - I think the best price my son got was a $3 fare to and from Cleveland.

if u lived on long island i would say get transport to that airport in central islip and get on a southwest plane its only 39 dollars one way.... to midway

Umm, sorry for not adding this important detail, but I live in Stockton, California, and the round-trip costs like $250.

Have you already visited U of C when classes were in session? Did you get a good "feel" for the college and especially the students there? if so, you probably don't need to make the trip. If not however, then it might very well be worth the $$ to be sure U of C is your cup of tea. They have a higher transfer out rate than many elite universities, in part because you really have to want to work hard . So talk to admissions and see if they can help you out with $ for airfare.

I am travelling around Europe with a fair bit of bus use, so I looked at Greyhound fares. $220 total and about 60 hours each way. Ouch.

Yes, its a long way from Chicago to the west coast. Travel expenses are something that has to be considered, even if you would only be coming home between quarters.
