I just checked the general cost of flights into Appleton. About $600 from NYC. Too much for me. It's easy to fly to Chicago for $200. Is there a bus or a train to Appleton from there? Is it cheaper to fly in to Green Bay. Transportation tips are appreciated!

Talking to myself here. So flying into Green Bay is almost as expensive, but flying into Milwaukee isn’t bad at all. Is there any transportation between Milwaukee airport and Appleton? Do most students at Lawrence who come from a distance fly in to Appleton and bite the bullet on the cost, or is there a better way?

I usually fly straight into Appleton (ATW). There’s an airport in town (Outagamie Regional Airport) that has terminals for Delta, United, and Allegiant airlines. All of the folks in the admission office fly out of ATW when they travel, as well.

If you do end up at LU, you will find lots of people who drive back/forth to Chicago, so if that hub is easier/more economical for travels in terms of cheaper flights in/out of Chicago, that will be of help in the future. You will find ways to get a ride… many families drive more than one kid to/from school. I have done it myself from where we live. :)

There’s no easy way to Appleton from Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, other than renting a car and driving the three hours. Check to see whether there’s limo service from Milwaukee’s airport to Appleton. No train service from Appleton to either Milwaukee or Chicago. Lawrence discourages students from bring cars to campus, with little on-campus parking available, according to DS’ friend who attends. Most kids are driven to/from campus by their parents. Unlike other schools like Grinnell, Lawrence doesn’t organize a shuttle bus to Chicago at term end, but perhaps should give that option serious consideration. Let their admissions folks know of your concern.

True, higgins2013. LU tried to find interest in a shuttle to the Twin Cities area, but there wasn’t enough interest, and with quarters that spell out more breaks than with just two semesters, lots of parents are making multiple trips across the tundra. However, if the OP does find cheaper flights in/out of Chicago from his/her hometown, making friends with someone who lives in the Chicago area could help with rides in order to garner the cheaper airfares. Some of my D’s friends have done this. It’s true what you say about the cars, too. I have learned that people ‘borrow’ the cars of those who have them, though, to get shopping done. There is a shuttle bus that goes out to the mall, too, on certain nights…but I digress! There’s no easy way to Appleton by bus even from MN.

It looks like one can get a bus from the Milwaukee airport to Appleton. Anyone know about this?

clarinet13mom just posted some good info about transportation to LU. Just don’t want anyone to miss it; it’s posted on the LU v Oberlin thread. :)

Oh, and there is a bus line that runs from Milwaulkee to Appleton. Never used it but I know it exists. It’s called Lamers I think? It’s Greyhound, basically.

Maybe that’s the ticket, then. It’s so much cheaper flying in to Milwaukee than Appleton. Thanks.
