Travel and living costs.

Are there any scholarships for international students which cover travel costs to the United States and living expenses, upon getting accepted to a college? Mind you, the scholarships can be private, given by the university or anything else. Major- Physics. Any help will be appreciated. ( I’m interested in pursuing an undergraduate program.)

Also, may I ask you to give me names of some colleges which provide these facilities?

***you posted this:

If that is the case, and your family can afford the full cost of attendance at places like Colgate, Grinnell, Carleton, then it is very unlikely you are going to find funding for international travel and living expenses.

If you don’t NEED financial aid…why would you need living expenses money? If you don’t have enough parent money to pay your living costs…then you DO need financial aid…so apply for it. Some of these colleges require that you live ON campus at least for freshman year. Do you have the money to pay for that?

International students very often need to keep their personal spending costs in mind when applying to college in this country.

BUT you haven’t told us what your family income is.

ETA…I just looked at your other threads. You have fine stats…35 ACT, 1600 SAT…right? But you are from India. There are thousands of well qualified applicants from your country who apply for admission to U.S. colleges. Your application for admission will be reviewed alongside the others from your region…most very well qualified as well. Your chance of admission is about the same as the other international students from your region…about 10-20 % at the schools you listed.

Did you already get an acceptance anywhere?

I was just curious. My family can’t afford these colleges, but my relatives can pay for them. They are ready for that. So i do not need FA.
But someone here on CC suggested that I should try to take off the burden from my relatives and only depend on them as a last resort. So, thats why I was exploring this angle. I’d be grateful if you tell me about some colleges or private orgs that provide these facilities.

Some schools include those costs in their FA, or at least consider the costs when awarding aid.

Some outside scholarships restrict the fund to tuition only, but if not restricted you could use the fund for travel or living. Outside scholarships are very difficult to get, and some are only available to citizens.

@Krypton28

Are you asking if there are organizations in the U.S. that will awards a citizen from another country money to pay for living expenses as a college scholarship?

I’m going to say…not likely.

Are there any agencies or organizations in YOUR country that will help pay for a student to study in the US.? If so, go there.

My kids work, can you get a job?

Facilities?

I am mom to an international student now in USA. During the exploring/enquiring/looking up of things nothing ever came up about any help/aid/ towards travel costs and living expenses. Only some merit aid was received.
For travel costs you have to take into your expenses/budget all the travels for the holidays as most internationals do go home to visit at that time. Besides these you need more money for good winter wardrobe if you are planning on going to cold/very cold climate state/area in US. My kid had winter clothes here in EU but over there is very much colder than our winters here so had to buy complete new winter wardrobe there that is good against -20C/4F.

@momAlazne

Actually many international students do NOT go home for ALL of the school holidays. It’s simply either unaffordable or logistically not possible.

Many colleges only have the long weekend for fall and Thankgivong breaks. The spring break is only a week.

My kid went to a college with a number of international students. They went home only for the longer Christmas holiday, and for the summer. The college had arrangements with a local hotel for lodging during breaks because the dorms were closed. International students had to pay for this.

Still getting scholarships for personal expenses…not likely. At all.

If you want financial help to take the pressure off of your relatives, then you will need to apply for financial aid based on your parents’ financial situation. The money that you are hoping for would come from the colleges/universities themselves, not from an outside organization.

Ive rarely seen colleges including “international travel costs” in their published COA.

Intl students have a couple of challenges…the high cost of int’l travel, the high cost of a healthcare plan, and sometimes finding a place to stay over holidays where the school closes the dorms.

Are you saying that you have a relative that will pay $60k-70k per year for college?

Yes

There are some colleges like MIT that provide travel allowances AFAIK. Can anyone list some more colleges that do the same?

There are rare instances of a student so outstanding, and so poor, that he/she will be given funds to cover travel costs, books, health insurance etc., and opportunities to earn some money while working on campus to cover personal expenses – in addition to full room and board. There is one student I know of on College Confidential’s international students forum who received such financial aid. Last I heard she was deciding between Dartmouth and Amherst.

The emphasis here is RARE. These are rare cases, and just because a school made such an offer once doesn’t mean it’s something it offers on a regular basis. Odds are, these students (besides being academically highly accomplished) also check other hard-to-fill-boxes for example female, from sub-Saharan Africa, pursuing sciences/math.

So, no chance. I get it. Thanks for replying.

One of the questions younare required to answer when applying for aid is how much is being paid for by anyone else.

Since you have no financial need, it’s highly unlikely you are going to find funding for your transportation.

I mean, if I choose not to depend on my relative and rather apply for FA, then is there some hope?

Suppose I do not get any help from my relative, then?

Most US colleges don’t have the money to fund domestic students. It’s extremely difficult for international students to get funding, so if you apply for financial aid it’s at the risk of not getting admitted.

If you have a relative who is willing/able to fund a US college to the tune of $60-70k/year, the easiest way to save them a substantial amount of money is to apply to some colleges whose cost is $35-40k/year. Have you looked into any of them?
