whats the best way to travel from SB to Sacramento and back. I'm leaving my car in Sac so which trains or whatever do I need to take to when i visit home

Hey dude, I live in Sacramento too and it was ass getting there for Spring Insight last month. I know there’s trains from Davis to Cal but not sure about Sac to SB. Have you tried looking at flights? I think I’ll be flying to orientation rather than a six and a half hour car ride again. =P

you can choose to ride amtrak which leaves the goleta station and travels to slo for a ride of 2.5hrs. then from slo it goes to san jose on a bus for 4hrs. then from san jose it goes to sacramento travel time of 3hrs on train. total travel time 9.5hrs total cost $71.

the other alternative is greyhound direct but 13.5hr ride cost of 90-100 depending if you want to get a refund or not

The fastest way via rail is to take the San Joaquin Amtrak from Sacramento to Bakersfield, and then take the thruway Amtrak bus connector from Bakersfield to Santa Barbara. This will drop you off in downtown Santa Barbara, and you can take the 24X bus directly to UCSB/IV. Total travel time is 8.5 hours on Amtrak plus 19 minutes on the 24X.

Alternatively, you can fly from SMF to SBA via Horizon Air. I see round trip flights in the range $165 roundtrip including taxes. SBA is right next to campus. If you go the Amtrak route, be sure to sign up for Amtrak rewards. There are also usually 20% off coupons floating around online. Good luck!

BTW, once you get to SB, you can probably find someone from Sacramento to rideshare with, or post on the rideshare boards on Facebook, ULoop, or Craigslist. I didn’t have a car for my first year and a half after I transferred so I got rides from people and that saved a lot of money.

I’m from sacramento too. There is a direct train from sac to downtown SB, its the Coast Starlight, and there is only 1 every couple days, and its an 11 hour ride. but the train seems pretty nice

thats what comes up when you search routes from sac to SB. san juaquin with bus transfer is 8 hrs vs 11 on the train, but you would have to wait for a bus. However, the coast starlight has a reputation for running late, so I honestly don’t know what I’m gonna do either.

Coast Starlight is a beautiful route, but yeah, it gets delayed. As for the thruway connecting buses, they wait right by the station specifically to pick up disembarking passengers from the train. So once you get off the train, head right for the bus and once everyone is onboard it’ll head out :)
