Travel thread summer 2023 and beyond

Getting a new knee before thinking about another big trip is definitely the sensible thing to do. But as Browning wrote, “Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, Or what’s a heaven for?”

Dreaming about the next great travel adventure is what keeps me going! :grinning:

Had my first knee replaced in Feb 2022. It’s still cranky. The second knee will need replacement at some point, and that’s the one that gets the cortisone shot. My doc wants to do the gel shot, too. Not as sure about that.

We drove cross-country last summer, five months post-op. Was able to do some short hikes. Do the PT!!

I’m still waiting for more info on lighter oxygen concentrators that have at least 2 liters continuous flow.

Wear the clothes in the shower to wash them?

In September I am going to Croatia for a musical cruise on a small boat on the Dalmatian coast. A friend hosts house concerts, and I have seen the musician, from Croatia originally, perform at his house. A group of friends and neighbors are all going. A friend is going as my roomie, and we will travel for a bit afterwards.

Question, my original United flight was changed to Lufthansa, which is less convenient timewise, but ok. However I can’t seem to book seats on Lufthansa to save my life. I called Lufthansa and they said there were plenty of seats available, but they’d charge to book for me, but keep trying and the website should work at a point. It still hasn’t. Has anyone else had issues with Lufthansa and seat reservations?

We have an AirBnB in Barcelona on the sixth floor. No elevator. Fortunately it’s just one night. It’s in a great location. No knee problems for us yet.

Ugh, can’t help you specifically but I hate trying to reserve seats. United bumped DH and DS one time when the system hadn’t let them reserve seats. So after that I do whatever I can to get them assigned. Not always possible though. :rage:

Here’s an article which should answer your question

Lufthansa: Check-in Policy - SeatGuru.

Short answer is that Lufthansa charges for seat selection until 23 hours before boarding. When you check in for your flight, at that point you can select your seat.

Take them or wear them into shower, add a bit of soap, wash. rinse and hang to dry. Roll in towel before hanging to get most of the water out. Pays to have quick dry underwear and socks too.

We went to the UK for 3 weeks with carryon only. I think you can do it.

We recently went to South Africa for two weeks. After we booked our tickets, we asked our friends if they were interested in joining us. One of them had just turned 70 and was feeling like he has had life pass him by. So he wanted to join us, especially since he knows I take care of all the planning. He booked tickets and we made reservations - but he had a heart attack just a few weeks prior to the trip. He’s doing ok, but doctors advised him not to travel internationally just yet - not when they were still fiddling with his medication. He had to cancel. A big bummer - but definitely a reminder - don’t wait! Do it now if you can!

I was hesitant on the gel shots as I had heard they were painful. I’m not yet on Medicare so it was also out of pocket. The orthopedist said the shot came as a 1,2 or 3 shot series and most end up picking the two. The one shot is more painful as it’s a lot of gel in one shot. I was very nervous and ended up taking 1/2 an Ativan before the injection. It helped to also not look. I’m so happy I did it. While I’m not pain free I’m so much better. I can exercise more and go up and down steps which I couldn’t do before. I still need a knee replacement but it helps to be able to put it off until I can find the time.

Deb922, thanks for this! I wish the Lufthansa website had stated this fact. I was aware of the 23 hour check in, but not the concurrent seat selection. Might be worth calling and paying.

Thanks @gouf78 ! Sadly that concentrator puts out way too little O2 for my or most patients needs. It’s unfortunate that the ones that put out sufficient O2 are heavy at 10+ pounds. With wheels, add another 5 pounds.

Inogen concentrator model is a lightweight innovation with superior technology. It provides oxygen at a 3 LPM pulse, at a fraction of the size of other POC units in the market to date.

This one is 3 liters per minute and one on the list goes to 5 liters per min

Pulse is insufficient for many of us who need to use O2 for sleeping. There are many lighter weight pulse machines.

I’m not on Medicare, either, and my insurance requires pre-auth. No way was I paying $1600 up-front when a) it’s not pre-authorized and b) my insurance doesn’t like to pay for the specific brand of gel the ortho uses --and unauthorized procedures don’t count against my out-of-pocket limit.

Good to know about the pain issues with a single shot. Sounds like I should have H with me if I need to take heavy-duty meds.

Just posting this because apparently it’s not widely known/understood.

In most cases, Medicare will not pay for health care outside of the US.
