What is the best way to travel from Humbolt to Southern California? Or for that matter to San Francisco?

If you can, I would recommend driving. Flying is way too expensive for that short of a distance, at least to San Francisco, but if you could get to SF or Sacramento, a flight from there to So Cal wouldn't be too bad.

When S was at Humboldt the parent network covered this topic many times (btw it is a really incredible network, full of all kinds of info). The general consensus was from LA take I-5 to Williams, cut over on 20 (goes up around Clear Lake) and connect with 101. It was deemed far superior that cutting over to 101 sooner or going up and taking 299. To San Francisco, go straight down the 101. Distance from HSU to San Francisco or Sacramento is almost the same. Hope this helps.

Thanks. See below for dumb question:
I know that Amtrack stops in Redding.
What is the rail line that goes along the 101?? Is that only for shipping?

Amtrak runs some sort of bus service from Martinez I believe. There is also Greyhound (or whatever it is called. There is no passenger train service up the coast. I am sending you an email with info I still have from the parent network that you might find useful.
