UCSD Transportation

I am not from socal and not familar with buses and trains there, so can anyone tell me what is the best/cheapest way to get from UCSD to UCLA, or at least the Westwood area (names of services, etc.)??

I think you can take a bus to the Amtrak station, and then from there, take the train to a station near LA. Not sure exactly which bus will go, but check out Transit.511sd.com

What's the cheapest way to get to SD from NorCal (Bay Area)? Car? Plane? Train?

It's about 500 miles to SD from SF so a round trip would take 3-4 tanks which averages to about $105-140 for gas. A round trip plane ride there is around $130 per person. About the same price for car and plane for one person. If you're going with somebody, going by car would save a lot of money.

Southwest- $50 tickets each way if you book far enough in advance. I live in Sacramento and always fly. Drove once, decided it wasn't worth the hassle.

yea im from the bay area and will probably use southwest. is there anything besides amtrak and metroline? (i think these are the names...)

I've taken the greyhound once since it was a last minute trip, and cost $50 as opposed to the $150 the plane ticket would have cost (both prices are one way). It was alright, but I was traveling with my friend so it didn't get too boring.

There's the NCTA north county transportation which has buses and light rail to get around north county and other rail to go to downtown SD (free for students)

As you can tell from my moniker I'm familiar with both.

It's fairly easy to get to LA from UCSD by train (city bus from campus to Del Mar train station then train to LA Union station via Oceanside) but the pain is getting from LA Union station, which is downtown LA, to UCLA in Westwood which is way west of downtown through lots of traffic.

If you search some threads (or post again) on the UCLA forum you'll find some suggestions of how to get from Union station to UCLA. I think you can do either buses the whole way or a combo of buses and the subway. The responses in the threads have particular bus and subway numbers and times.

If you're going to visit a friend at UCLA who has a car, then you can try to get from UCSD to LAX via an airport shuttle (I don't know the cost) and then have your friend pick you up at LAX or take another shuttle from LAX to UCLA but the two shuttles will add up quite a bit in cost. LAX is about 15-20 minutes (depending on traffic) south of UCLA.

ucsd_ucla dad,

Thank you!! Yes our friend in LA is going to pick us up, so i think i will take the route you suggested and go to LA union station. our friend lives in the beverley hills/westwood area, so i think that is about 10 min away? and are you talking about the metroline train from oceanside to la union station? where can i purchase tickets for the train? and if it is the metroline, will that ticket cover the cost of the city bus ticket?

^^ Sorry, I don't have too much detail for you. I think there are a couple of lines that go from Oceanside to LA-union station. Amtrak is one and Metrolink is another.

I think BH/Westwood to Union station will take more than 10 minutes. It may take up to an hour depending on traffic. It all depends on the time of day and traffic. It should make it pretty easy for you though if they can pick you up at Union station.

From UCSD, Del Mar is the town immediately north of UCSD along I-5. The next town is Solana Beach. You s/b able to take the train all the way from Solana Beach but you might need to change trains in Oceanside - check the schedules to determine that. You can take the bus there or you could take a train (the 'Coaster') from Sorrento Valley if it's still running. There might even be a UCSD shuttle that goes to the Sorrento Valley station. That station is pretty much on the other side of the freeway from UCSD - not far.

Another option - make friends with other UCSD students who are from LA who have a car and who go home sometimes on weekends and offer to pay for gas if they'll give you a ride.

what is the fastest way to get from riverside to UCSD?
no car
