We're going for a visit next week. What's the best way to get to Muhlenberg from the Boston area (or New England), by car or by air?

I think you’d be very limited to try to get to Allentown by air, unless you own your own plane. The most direct way by car would be I-84 to I-87 at Newburgh, then I-287 from Mahwah to I-78. Take I-78 west to Allentown and take the exit (I forget which number) for Muhlenberg. I drive the stretch from Newburgh to Easton all the time and in 2+ years have never encountered a major hassle with traffic (although there is always that risk).

Thanks - how long does that drive take you. Where are you originating?

Allentown has a large airport (ABE) so you don’t really need your own airplane (ha ha) but you would most likely have to connect through philly or newark, although some airlines have direct flights. You can check the ABE website.

merhan7 – Last I looked ABE had connections to Boston through Philadelphia but not Newark. You can get a bus between Newark and ABE, however. It is just way too much of a hassle in my book.

queenbee14 – I live south of Albany and it takes about 3 hours to drive from home to Easton.

I have a daughter who lives in Boston, and D2 attends Muhlenberg. I’ve made the trip once (well, going each way) by car; it was in December, and the weather was not great. It took me a solid five hours (maybe more like 5 1/2). But flying will take you much longer - if you include the time you need to be at the airport ahead of time, time between connecting flights, getting a rental car/cab to campus, etc. I’d drive it in a heartbeat.

We did a similar trip in reverse a couple of weeks ago. We drove from Allentown area to Rhode Island and then to Worcester and then back to Allentown. It was around 5 hours. Whatever you do, avoid NYC as much as possible. We took the Tappenzee Bridge and headed towards Stamford, CT and then west. I-95, I-87/287 to 287 and then I-78 west. It was surprisingly not a bad ride. The worst part is entering PA from NJ on route 78. They are doing construction at the toll plaza and it gets really backed up.

It looks like my D is going to go next week to Muhlenberg for an overnight visit. She will be coming from CA. I talked to the school today and they said they would speak to Charles Ritcher and set her up with a theatre student as a host. D is looking forward to sitting in on some classes and trying to get a feel for the school. She visited a couple of years ago and loved it, but now that it is getting close to decision time she really wants to see it again and decide if she sees herself her for the next four years.

My H was able to book a flight for her into the airport at Allentown for a decent price.

I almost forgot everything you wrote previously when I read this!

There are at least a couple of girls from CA that I know of… one is a senior and another is a junior. There’s something to be said about talking with someone who has had to deal with the same travel issues/being so far away from home issues (although my D is, too). Am glad she was able to work out a visit. The campus will be absolutely beautiful for spring (well, if you can ignore the work going on for the new cafeteria!).

teriwtt - She is really excited to be visiting and getting to sit in on classes. She has your D’s email as well as the girl who is a senior from CA so I am sure she will try to set up a time to at least meet each of them for a few minutes and talk. I also think it will be good for her to do this on her own and not have her Dad or I there to give our input so she can really see if this is the place for her.

Thank you so much for all of the valuable info you have given to me about the school. I fell that this would be a great fit for her, but she needs to find that out for herself. We are really in the home stretch now and I am excited that D will soon be making her decision.

kathiep: thanks for the 78W heads up at the toll; we are going on Sat for Junior Day and we were trying to figure out when we have to leave the house; will build in more time…
