Treatise Against the liberal arts

/lock

again

oh, and no matter how much people really reall want to solve the problems or hunger, poverty, etc. you’ll need math/science/economics /(applied math).

Solving these problems could come about without Liberal Arts. I mean, it probably won’t be for as pretty of a reason as “it’s the right thing to do” but more along the lines of it’s economically sound or for the good of everyone based off of science. Basically, you NEED applied math to solve these problems. Liberal Arts only help, and only some.

[Fighting Crime With Math](Fighting Crime With Math | NSF - National Science Foundation)

MLDwoody is right and you’re all too busy being condescending and snide to just quit deluding yourselves and admit it. None of you liberal arts majors have manage to produced a convcting argument as of yet. You just throw around stuff about my age as if thats relevant. Look the truth is that liberal arts majors just have never contributed as much to society. Even long long ago. Socrates was a worthless nuisance to society and he deserved exaction. All he did was fill peoples’ minds with corrupt idea about Latin society. And plenty of other people to that we think are so great but really were just annoyances in society.

We need to be thinking about progress, not empty ideas. And thats what liberal arts professors don’t realize. they dont realize that they’re basically just lecturing to a room full of people destined to become liberal arts professors. Its a deadly circle and it’s the cancer of our university system. And besides most of the liberal arts professors I’ve had experience with are really opinionated but narrow minded and focused on Indocrinating students.

Yup, yup. Ignorance and hate has always been fought against with math and science.

I know that there are some ■■■■■■■■ lib arts people here probably thinking, “Oh, but you can use math and science for evil too! You can use the internet and communication to spread hate as well. What really makes these innovations worthwhile is the mission behind it.” Blah, blah, blah.

But us non-hippies know the truth. If we have a problem, we just get rid of the people giving us grief and problem solved.

Math & Science >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hippies

Because all non-mathematics/natural science majors are hippies? Nixon, that damn hippy…

And wow, someone ■■■■■■■ the tags hard.

I heard Starbucks recruits a lot of Liberal Art majors.

Yeah, like their CEO.

Well, if nothing else, we can make tasty coffee! (You know, the coffee that you guys need to survive at an engineering college. And the coffee that’s not dining hall coffee.) I’m particularly partial to iced caramel macchiato, myself.

Critical thinking and problem-solving don’t belong to a specific “major.” Yes, you can use mathematical models to analyze societal trends - that isn’t news. And no one can seriously argue that liberal arts disciplines have no place in solving problems. ALL disciplines have their place in society - that’s why we’re given the opportunity to choose what kind of education we’d like to receive.
God, can we just stop having this same discussion over and over already? Nothing short of force (or the promise of free food in my case) is going to cause people to just drop everything and become engineering majors.

Damn straight they’re all hippies. All they do is smoke pot and throw around their wealthy parents’ money. Lazy *******s talking about Ghandi and Nelson Mandela and literature and philosophy all day. They’re so annoying.

You do realize that if you do go to MIT, you’ll need 8 humanities arts or social sciences classes to graduate?

Did you say Socrates was a nuisance?
So everyone who questions authority and conformity deserves to be killed off asap right? I’m a high school '12er like you. You, nor I, nor ANYONE in high school or lower should comment on collegiate things like that. As another poster mentioned, the lib arts major isn’t hindering the education of an engineer.

I want to double major in computer science(or engineering) and psychology/cognitive science. Why? Not because I only want to make money, which is what another poster said about engineers (if I recall correctly) but because I want to HELP people. My goal in life is to enter the Human-Computer Interaction field to improve people’s lives with advanced artificial limbs, cognition assisting devices, and other things. Why? Because I was a counselor at a camp for children with disabilities and a little girl had an ineffective cognition (speech, in this case) assistant, and that inspired me to DO something about it. For her, and everyone else.

OP- I hate HS english and social studies too, but to survive as a mature adult in this world, one needs to be well-rounded. Yes, you can major in engineering, but how are you going to communicate your ideas and communicate with other people? A 30 page paper sucks, I know, but to say that half the world’s professional preference is useless and unimportant is a display of your immaturity.

I agree, I don’t understand the point of a gender studies major, or the like, and even though these people might not make a lot, their contribution to society, no matter how small, counts.

That’s the great thing about America (can’t speak for other countries, not familiar with their education systems. But the main reason people come here is for a better education in something THEY choose)-freedom of choice. You sound like you want to train an army of math/science people to take over the world. A little totalitarian dictator-ish.

You’ll probably not read this, or pass it for “not convincing” evidence. You need to be open-minded and willing to accept other’s reasoning. Something studying ONLY math/science won’t prepare you for.

I got a t shirt

Social Sciences aren’t bad. And you can just take the Humanities Pass/Fail

Memos :)

OP is not really attacking the liberal arts but an attitude that he is attaching to the liberal arts; that is, the attitude of a daydreamer who is incapable of applying their knowledge in the real world. Maybe there are more people like that in the liberal arts but so what?

The problem with programs like engineering, business, and the sciences is that they do not question the system that they operate in. You wouldn’t expect them to, though - that’s not their place. Liberal arts can question the system, though (not to say they are guaranteed to). Let’s face it, the next big idea for the betterment of society (past ones being universal health care, democracy) is more likely to come from someone versed in the liberal arts than a marine biologist.

Anybody watch the Big Bang Theory? Here are your TV soulmates, OP!

Oh…oh my head, the ■■■■■■ have returned. Shakes head oy vey. Sir, you seem to only be here to stir up trouble amongst those of us here at CollegeConfidential. These anti-humanities viewpoints are expressed in a way that is entirely offensive. I would appreciate it if you had the respect not to insult my major and the comprehension of what it entails to recognize how patently offensive you are actually being.

Same conversation also bad-mouths engineers:

And the intro song to the show includes “Math, Science, History.”

Can you tell I like the show? Because I like the show.

Yeah…how will someone with a degree in gender and women’s studies ever contribute to society? It’s not like the world has any gender inequality issues that most people don’t even notice. And racism? Hello, it’s not the fifties anymore!

This argument does have some validity but we can’t wipe seats all LA majors. Some are important while others not so much. Poli sci is important becaus they run the country but linguistics and family studies do nothing except give people false hope of getting a job. Education is another one that should stay. I think we should reduce our LAs but there are some vital degrees that society still needs. (therapy through music is not one of them)

Greek society*, and Greek society was corrupt in many ways.

I also love how you deem philosophy to be worthless, then state your idea of engineer-kings. First, that idea already exists: technocracy; second, this idea is nothing more than a modified version of Plato’s Kallipolis, where the philosopher-kings rule; third, this would be a form of political philosophy, and you happened to have already dismissed both political science and philosophy due to their “worthlessness”.

Sounds like your classes were really–wait, you’re a junior in high school. I’ve found my professors to be quite the opposite: open-minded individuals who both educate myself and my peers, as well as listen to our ideas. Going back to Plato’s Republic, my humanities professor admits to having changed opinions regarding certain aspects of the Kallipolis with each new conference he conducts. Not only that, but he doesn’t talk much during our conference. He will ask questions to probe at certain points that need to be further discussed, but he mostly stays quiet until the conversation hits a temporary wall. With what professors have you had so much interaction, and where exactly to they teach?

Your age is relevant due to the fact that you seem to be the manifestation of it, considering your ignorance, narrow-mindedness, and naivete.

All of which are used to unravel the mysteries (of the world and universe around us).
