Hello,
I’m a current Trinity University student, and I’m from the DFW area, so I’m definitely familiar with Austin College, but I will mainly speak about Trinity because I know it so much better.
1.) Your interests should drive what major you choose, and its perfectly acceptable to go to college undecided. At Trinity you can’t actually declare a major until the end of your sophomore year. This rule is so beneficial in my opinion; in other schools you’d have to go through the hassle of changing your major and then you might have trouble graduating in 4 years, but here at Trinity we expect you to change your mind a few times, and we give you the opportunity to do so.
2.) Classes, again, should follow your interests. Here at Trinity we have a required course system called Pathways, where a student has to fill all sorts of requirements before they graduate. These requirements really help students figure out what they want to do. Someone with an engineering major in mind would come in, and in order to fulfill a requirement, would have to take a theatre class, for example. Or a dance class, or a class on the epics of Homer. These will really help round someone out as a person as well as help them figure out what they really want to do in life, especially if they haven’t tried everything yet.
3.) For acceptance into medical school, the Trinity website states “Trinity students who complete required courses with a GPA of 3.5 or higher have a success rate of 90%.”
4.) YES. Research, especially in the sciences but includes every subject, goes on continuously throughout the school year and the summer. One of my absolute favorite things about Trinity is the fact that so many undergraduates get to do real research in a real lab with their professors. The science building on campus was just completed a few years ago and has all the latest gadgets and toys for any researcher. Getting involved in research here is so incredibly easy: just show interest and talk to professors about it and you’ll likely get to do some.
As for clubs, we have a lot of different organizations, some of which are quite unique. For example we have the Trinity Bee Alliance, who are essentially aspiring apiarists and enthusiasts; Swing Bums, an entire club devoted to swing dancing; The Trinity Cat Alliance, who take care of the colony of feral cats that call our campus home; and many many more, including the general math, science, and literature clubs.
5.) I’m not entirely sure what this question is asking. Are you inquiring about students transferring from Trinity to UTSW?
Anyways, lets get someone from Austin College to post about them, I don’t know if I could do them justice. I know that it is a very good school with a student population just smaller than that at Trinity.
All the best in your college selection,
Trinicat
P.S. When searching for information about Trinity, be sure to note that it’s Trinity University, not College. Trinity College is up in Connecticut and won’t give you the right information.
One thing to consider is cost. Trinity and Austin College are both private schools and very expensive (although excellent schools). If you plan on going to med school, you need to consider a lower-cost undergrad school; otherwise, your costs and student loans are going to be through the roof.
