So guys, if you have read my other posts, I am aspiring to attend med - school, and possibly try for a combined bs/md program.

I have gone and volunteered in other countries, such as South Africa, in hospitals and such. Should I put this on a college app, and would it even help my chances. I really went to these countries just to help out and what-not, but would such a trip help my chances?

If there’s anything (regarding EC’s) that you’re contemplating about whether or not to add to your application, just add it - as long it can’t hurt you.

Well, I just wanted to know if it would help or if it would just kind of come off to colleges as a “Look at me, I have money to do these kinds of things” stuff.

I don’t think people will see it as “Look at me I have money”. There are tons of organizations that go all the time to impoverished countries who don’t have even close to the healthcare resources the United States has with physicians, med students, undergrads, etc. You’ll see diseases and disorders there you would never see here. It will definitely set you apart and will probably be a month or summer well spent. You’ll also get exposure to real medicine and physicians.

everyone hates kids who spend their money going to poor countries to help its denizens. (sarcastic)

but as a side note, realize that, as a high schooler, you have no practical skills and you won’t really be able to give them very much save a false sense of hope.

so now that I think about it, they may actually hate someone who squanders their parents’ money instead of using it for things which will actually help the world.

really the only people you will be helping are the airline company execs. and remember, we must bring down the corporations. we must bring the means of production back to the people. nevermind, I am sure they will hate you because of this. in fact, I’m sure god will toss out your app to the heaven’s early entry program.
