This is the French program I'm considering. It's $1,689. http://www.cactuslanguage.com/en/courses/junior_programmes/france/normandy.php Do you know of any ideas of how I can raise a few hundred dollars? My mom could probably pay around $700 since that is what the Japan trip is offering. My dad would probably pay around $500. ...Still $500 short.

Really, it sounds like you have decided yourself. Do what you want because it isnt going to help with college apps, unless you actually learn something and do something with that knowledge.

but I will throw in my two cents. japan is cool. nuff said.

i lived in europe when i was 12, and went to paris several times. i didnt like it except disney land. but disney land tokyo is better anyway.

dunno....bake sale, lemonade stand, beg for some job with ur parents like cleaning the house or something for money...dont u have any money from like, birthdays and christmases and stuff?

I've saved up $825 and opened a bank account when I was ten. I'm not sure if I want to spend that much though.

I'll fill out the Japan application. If I get accepted - I'll go. If I don't - I'll TRY to convince my parents to let my go to France.

i would go to france. mainly because i'm korean and hate everything that has anything to do with japan.

and also i know a bit of french, and i've learned so much about their culture. it sounds so fun! :)

Jonathan K.,
Count yourself lucky your parents will give you some money. The vast majority of american families (remember median income =40k) can't even afford to spend any money on travel.

My dad makes about $150,000 per year, so there's no excuse for him not to pay even A LITTLE for an education trip. So, hopefully with his new job I'll be able to go to France.

My mom makes about $60,000 - $70,000 per year. She came back down here on her own from a failed marriage with my dad (in Canada) and she started her own business. She spends so much money on my sister's horse, and everything else my sister wants, that she can't afford to do anything for herself or me. It annoys me that she'll buy a $600 saddle for my sister, then complain that she's cutting it close on our house payment.

I still don't know what to do in terms of deciding though. I mean, $700 is still a lot of money. BTW - I just realized the prices on the French sites were in POUNDS, not dollars, not unfortunately, it's like doubled what I thought it was. lol. Although hopefully with a few fundraisers and I can pull through, with the help of my parents of course.

Maybe I can tell my dad I can pay him back in like ten years. lol. I wonder if he'd go for that.

bump.......

Yes, I know. That's why I asked if anyone could find any for middle schoolers.

you didn't specify in the original post, you simply said:

Does anyone know of any language/political science summer programs here in the U.S. or abroad?

I also said:

"My school is offering the opportunity for four seventh or eighth graders to visit Japan for two weeks in the summer."

I thought you would know that I was a seventh grader by not only that post, but my others making fun of my age.

Get the hell away from here Jonathan K.

I know you are a middle schooler. I was simply informing you that most of the summer programs are for high schoolers. I'm not sure, but I don't think there are any summer programs in your field for kids your age.

Umm...okay.

There are some. I just posted one in France. Theere are certainly not many, but there are some.

sry... dont know any for middle schoolers. thats why im going to regular camp this summer.

Our school had a two-week program in Costa Rica that was offered for all seventh and eighth grade students enrolled in Spanish. I say you should go to Japan and see something different than what you already love.

prepkid..have some tolerance.

No Korean should ever have tolerance for Japan until reparations are paid and acknowledged. Besides, there will not be any wars over it, since both are major economic boosters and business as well as cultural partners with each other; why would one want to blow up their #2 business partner?

its simply because we should not blame the present generation for the misdeeds of their ancestors. im chinese, and the japanese massacred the chinese during WWII, so i would feel a lot of resentment against them. some of my jewish classmates talked once about their relatives still totally anti-german, and then i thought the whole thing was stupid - like in tale of two cities when darnay is sent to execution because his father and uncle had raped a peasant girl. lets all get along.

sry jonathan k, didnt mean to turn this thread into a moral lesson. japan is great, but go to france if you like. i would love to go to france. :)
